I went to the track today and coughed up a new best for myself. I was just wondering if a 14.7 is normal for a 98 vert with only a o/r h-pipe and flows, and the stock 2.73 gears. I've always been told that the pre-99 stangs are slow, and having a vert, I should be even slower. There was a 2000 gt vert there that was running slower then I was. Also on that run it took me 2 tries to get it into 3rd gear, and I'm using the stock 245/45/17 goodyears off a 03 gt.

I was in the right lane, a 03 gt was in the left lane

sounds about right to me. lower 60 foot time will help out, so get some stickier tires!!! pre 99 GTs have less HP than the 99+ GTs, so they will be faster. this is due to new heads, intake manifold, and reworked cams in the 99+ GTs. just noticed humidity was pretty high as well, so that didnt help any.

just noticed: if u dont miss 3rd gear, u will be faster too. get a Steeda Tri-Ax, some DRs, subframe connectors, gears, UCAs/LCAs and u will see better times. cams, nitrous, blower, headers etc.. would also be a great way to lower ur ET

I have about $700 to blow on my car, so I am looking for stuff to buy, I was going with gears, but the guy I was racing has 3.73's in his car, and was running high 13's with the stock gears. Has anyone else noticed a loss in performance with higher gears?

Steeper gears wont kill performance only cause traction issues. your 98 vert should have 3.27 not 2.73's in the rear.

I drove my friends 03 gt when it was stock with 3.27's , and his gears were much steeper then mine. I don't know if it makes a difference, but my car did come with 16" stock wheels.
Here's a picture of speed vs. rpm in second gear in my car.

I thought most 96-98s came with 2.73 gears and 3.08 or 3.27 was an option?

I'm kinda stuck on which gears to get though...I'v heard many people say they love 4.10's and I'v heard many people say they are too much for the car. Also, how fast will I be able to go with 4.10's before I run out of gears.

Ya thats gotta be 2.73's. I have 3.27's and like em pretty well. I think im gonna go with 3.73's. Just because I like being able to somewhat wind out the gears, its pretty fun. Your 14.7 is pretty damn good if you ask me. My 98 ran a 14.4, with just o/r H, cone filter and pulleys. I had a crappier 60' too. I know what you mean about third gear. At the track I seem to grind gears for some reason.

They are 2.73's, he says so in the first post.

And 4.10's are NOT too much gear.

One other thing, I read somewhere that pre-99 mustangs did not have a electric speedo. But, when i pulled my tranny a few months ago, it appeared to be electric. I never touched any cable besides the one for clutch. I also forgot to mention I had 2 12" subs in my trunk when I was racing, maybe i should leave those at home next time.

weight will kill ur times as well. Try taking out ur subs, spare tire, jack, passenger seat, and even get the rear seat delete kit. this should lower ur time a little bit

3:73's are perfect for 96-98 Mustangs (5 speed)...4:10's for autos...
