Is this (or a similar) Fox worth $ 1000.00??

I am considering a FOX convertible as a project car. I reasonably inclined mecahincally and so that side of this does not concern me. However, I have never done body work and am really interested in trying to repair and repaint a car myself. I am always looking to add to my repotire and this would be the next step. I can weld, so I can probably handle welding in new metal. This is an example of some of the cars I see on the cheap side and the price intrigues me because the price of admission is low and if I do all the body work, then I can end up with a nice looking car (if I do it right) for a very low cost. I know I can buy nice ragtops with less than 100,000 miles for about $4000 so i don't want to spend more than that in the end, but by the same token, if I buy a car that does not need body work, then I do not learn anything.

Anyway this car looks to have rusting rocker panels. I have only seen these pictures - not the car in person, so I don't know any more than you see here.

For $1000 on a complete, running convertible, I think you're going to get what you pay for. I see it needs a new top, and has multiple issues with paint and dents. If you're willing to broaden your search area, you may be able to find something for a little more, but in better shape. Cutting out rocker panels and replacing them is not a very beginner friendly project.

i agree. of all the areas to fix, rocker panels are not one of the easier spots. check it out in person to see how bad it is and if there's any rust under the car, i'd look elsewhere.

I think for the price it doesn't look too bad .
It would come down to how bad it actually is in person and how well it runs/drives ect.
I personally wouldn't be too worried about those rockers but then again I'm pretty experienced in body work.

For $1000, it may not be bad...but i'd need to see it in person and under the hood. Also need to see how bad the rust is

What are the parts worth??

I talked to the seller today and he said that it runs and drives good. Will check that out myself of course. Better yet, I got the impression he will let it go for quote a lot less. Older gent and he wants it gone.

What are the parts worth? Here is what I am thinking. If I were to get it for $ 750.00 and I decide the body work is over whelming for an amature, could I part the car out and make my money back?

Depends on the condition. Beleive it or not, stock fox's don't really have a whole hell of a lot worth parting out. Trying to part it out will take a long time. People don't exactly jump all over the place for stock stuff.

You could sell the engine, transmission (although you won't get much more than $100 for a stock AOD), ecu if it's a mass-air car, the tail-lights and the doors/fenders if they're in good shape. You could probably get your money back - how long it takes to sell everything is another story.

You might even be able to sell the car whole for the same price you pay for it.

I'd at least try to find one with a decent interior (read: Not faded porno red) and a 5 speed.

That car is worth it just for the parts alone. Find a 4banger notch or even clean hatch and swap drivetrains.

I always run from a car with a trailer hitch. Major red flag, haha. I wouldn't pay $1000 for that car, personally. For $500 to $600 I'd consider it, IF it was mechanically sound. Projects are fun but not when you bite off more than you can chew. Check it out in person and make a low offer and see where it takes you.

You gotta think about the floor boards too. I would bet if those rockers are rotted you soon be able to Fred Flintstone brake with it too. Verts that leak are good for rust...trust me I know.
