Its the starter ..but not the starter...help

Im working on a '95 GT with an auto. My buddys car would not start, so we had the starter checked. Advance auto says its the starter, so I put the new one on.
The car still will not start. It made a loud clicking noise then stopped. I think it was the gear trying to engage, but how do you line up the starter gear to the flywheel perfectly?
Now when you try to start it, it does not do anything

Any help is appreciated.

sounds like the battery is dead. I honestly don't think there's a way to incorrectly install the starter.

some starters come with shims....ill find out if the starters i sell for your car come with shims (I work at NAPA)...

I had this problem before, but it wasnt with shims. If your battery is fine, and you turn the key and no click at all, your power wire to the solenoid is shot. You may have to run a new wire if you cant clean the old one.

i checked the box for your starter and there is an additional wire with an end on it to fit on the solenoid...did you get one of these from advanced? if you did you should use it...apparently the wires go bad on that starter otherwise they wouldnt give you a brand new wire with two connections on it

I have never seen shims on a mustang starter. Only on a stupid chevy...

Load test the battery, if that is not the problem use a test light and check that you have power at the starter solenoid when you are in the cranking position.

yep, some of the aftermarket starters, in particular, require shims.

have you put a jumper battery (as if to jump start) to see how it does? how are the battery cables, motor ground, and starter cable? if any one is deficient, that can create similar problems.

On any car always put the headlights on first, if they go dim when turning the key....battery...... on your mustang if you changed the starter , try jumping the seloniod on the inside fender '" make sure its in park ", next check both cables from the battery, they go bad after years and wont carry voltage to the starter or make a good ground, also there is a smaller wire from the - side of battery to the body it grounds the body ,on GM cars many wont start if this wire is bad or missing, last if you bought a rebuilt starter there is a chance it may be a clam....my call though is you have a bad connection at the battery....good luck .................................Johnny

Thanx for the replies. tHE BATTERY IS NEW, AND THE HEADLIGHTS COME ON AND STAY ON. nO SHIMS CAME WITH THE STARTER.

I did put on a new pos. and neg. battery cable. The neg. cable did not have the little wire that connects to the front radiator support.

Anew development... he now says that he has a kill switch on his alarm, could that go bad?

yes a hidden kill switch could be it , did you try jumping the solinoid out with a screwdriver ? being you changed everything did you change the solinoid ? if so are the cables hooked up right ? its easy to make a mistake , does the motor turn with a breaker bar? may have problems , check to see if the motor can be turned by hand ....... good luck ...............Johnny

Another thing to look out for is that your starter wires aren't touching anything. When I put my starter on after I got my longtube headers on, I accidently had the shim siutting against the header. When I tried to start it I heard a spark and then it would not start anymore. So make sure you check the wire all the way from the solenoid to the starter.

do you have 12 volts at the solenoid trigger? this will tell you if it is a kill switch issue.
