so heres the deal, i'm putting my engine back together and i put my stock balancer and Jegs timing pointer on... now the motor is set to TDC and the pointer is a 10* pointer for stock motor. shouldn't the pointer be set to 10* now? if you look at the pic, specifically at the very top you see the 1st timing mark on the balancer which is no where close to 10* advanced. some one please help? thanks.

If the engine is at true TDC, the pointer should be pointed at "0" 10 degrees is where the the ignition should fire at, if is adjusted to stock settings.

the engine is at true TDC, piston 1 all the way up... but the pointer isnt any where near 0* even, as seen in the pic.

If the balancer is not on "0" when the engine is at TDC, either the pointer is screwed, or the balancer has slipped.

Make sure you are at TDC. You have a FEW degrees when the piston does not move, called top rock position. Turning it very SLOW and note where the piston just stops moving, mark it. Now SLOWLY turn till it just starts to move again, mark it. TDC is 1/2 way between these marks.

The longer an engines stroke is, the more degrees there will be in the rock position. It does the same thing at the bottom of the stroke.

Once you are sure you are at exactly TDC, the lines should line up. If the damper has more than 100,000 miles on it, just get a new one. If less, you can get a degree tape, and remark it. I would guess it is the damper that has slipped between the 2 halves.

Good luck.
