My husband and I just picked up a 78 2+2 four speed. The car is in good shape but likes to jump out of second gear some times. My husband owned a 78 cobra (when they were new) that did the same thing. Is this a common problem and is there a "permanent" fix? Also, the power steering seems to moan. He's pretty sure it's the pump and is planning on replacing it. Any other possibilites of what it could be?

Thanks!!

well welcome, for pumps are notoriously grumbly, but also you may check the fluid level. the honest fix for the IIs 4spd is a swap to a t-5 out of a foxbody

Welcome to the forum. I'm new around here too only been here for a few weeks.

Hard to say what the problem may be with your RAD-4 until you open the box. It could be a worn shift fork or syncronizer. It is repairable or you could replace the trans with one that's known to work well.

My 4-speed does the same thing. It will pop out of second gear when coasting down a hill. I have a T-5 tranny that will be going in soon. Like 77sleeper said, that will fix it.

I had the same with my Mach1. When I re-built my trany, I had to put new plastic inserts on the Trans. fork. These were available from a Ford dealer in the States. My local ford dealer did a search for me and found the parts in Oklahoma; I think that it cost me about $2.50 or so for each set. Unfortunately you do have to drop the trany. I also needed to put in a new bearing set, that was the main reason I had to pull mine. Good luck

Welcome.

Yes, it's a very common problem. And the reason I ditched the RAD trans 24 ... 25? years ago.

When it starts popping from 2nd jumping out of reverse isn't far behind.

My fix was to install a '67 top loader from a Mustang.

Mark,

Not to get way off track but.... How did you do the clutch set-up for the toploader? I had thought about doing that as well but didn't because of the clutch difficulities. What bell did you use? I had a O/D "toploader" style trans (from a 70's Granada)I was going to use but when with the auto as it was much eaiser.

Thanks,

Tim
