Hey, I am doing my 5-lug conversion. I've got a complete rear-assembly out of a '95 stang. axles, etc. the 8.8 with 3.08 gears / posi-track

Only thing is it's been sitting out in the open for half a year. looks pretty rusty. I don't have any experience messing with rear diffs .... any of you guys have experience with old differentials... i don't even know what kind of metal it's made out of. should i sand it down...

I think i've seen some guys powder coat them..

anyway, i'm just talking out of my ass. go ahead and give me some advice.

The center housing is cast iron, the tubes are steel. Cover the axles and wire bush or sandblast it to clean it up.

Clue: use a magnet to tell iron and steel from aluminum. Aluminum is not attracted to a magnet.

They are 3/4" longer on each side. Everything still fits OK. Some extra wide wheels may need a different offset to prevent the tire from rubbing on the inner fender. Sometimes the fix for this is to roll the lip on the inner fender.
