Just got a dual 12" setup with a 600w amp for free, need opinions

That's an old school kicker setup, dont remember the model #'s. I don't recognize the amp as being a "Name brand" amp. I would try to use both subs, because if you're going to be using that amp, and you got a 'vert, you are going to want to get as much as possible out of them. My suggestion would be a down firing ported box (Ported boxes are more efficient.) But if you want to save space, go sealed. I recommend a down firing setup 'cause if I remamber right ya' got a mach system. With that box setup the height of the box only has to accomidate the 6in er' so of speaker depth instead of the full 12 of the cone. You should be able to get one of those under that mach box. However the equipment that you have isn't exactly "competition ready" if ya' catch my drift, but the price was right. I'd try that for starters and if it dosn't make you happy, you can always re-use the new custom box and upgrade the other equipment.

I don't know if free is really gonna help. Those woofers look to be on thier last legs. And that amp looks to be 60W and not 600W (meaning el cheapo amp). I honestly would not even bother hooking that setup up to your mustang unless you verify first that everything is working. It would be a pain in the butt to run all the wiring and hookups only to find out that the amp and subs sound like crap.

That stuff should be in a museum somewhere...

You mean a run down Pawn Shop or the landfill.

i wouldnt invest any more money into that system if i were you. it wouldnt be worth it. sell it to someone else and save up for a better system if you really want one.

If you do decide to use them though or decide to save for something better, I would go with a sealed box if you listen to more rock than hip hop. But the idea of doing a down firing box is not the greatest of ideas in the sense the the sound waves will not be able mature enough since the woofer will only be inches from a solid surface. The best idea is to have the woofer firing towards the end of your car and as far away has you can get it too. hope that helps

yep, do what the previous posts suggested. I wouldn't even bother putting that amp/sub combo in. Those subs look to be on their last legs...the amp is questionable and it looks as though it might hurt your electrical system being that it looks quite old.

For the type of music you listen to, a sealed box is best. Ported/vented is mostly for rap, hiphop, dance music but you can go ported for rock music. Subs in sealed boxes require more power than ported since the port or vent in ported boxes do most of the work for the volume of low frequencies.

A 10" would probably suffice since it's punchier than a 12", but a 12 has more surface area than a 10 and will hit the lows much better. So you can always try and see what works best to your liking.

I would also invest in some sound deadening material in the trunk area. Dynamat Extreme is easy to install, but expensive. You can use some of that quick drying foam to fill up the double body paneling in your trunk...it's quite messy, but once it dries, it fills up the pockets of air in your trunk area.
