I just got my car back from the shop yesterday and finally got to test out the revamped suspension and steering. This is a list of what I’ve had done:
Rebuilt steering box by Lee Manufacturing to 12.1 variable ratio
Replaced power steering pump
1” lowering springs front/rear
1 1/8 front sway bar
7/8” rear sway bar
Edelbrock IAS shocks
All bushings replaced by urethane
Weld in subframe connectors installed
The rest of the suspension was freshened as needed (this means I don’t remember all of the rest of the pieces that were replaced.)

What a difference!!!! The road feel is fantastic, especially the steering. When I used to get out of my daily driver and get into the Mustang the first thing I would notice is the difference in steering feel. No more. It’s tight and on center. I would highly recommend to everyone to get your steering box rebuilt to modern specs.
The car now rides and handles much better than before; it’s a real joy to drive.
One thing I’m bummed about is that I had a/c installed and it’s too cool now to use, guess I’m going to have to wait until next year.

I get the car for a week and then it’s off to get painted. Once that’s done I’ll post some pics.

Where did you find a variable ratio steering box?

The '71-'73's came with a variable ratio box if the car came with the competition suspension. Mine didn't come with a variable ratio so I had a standard Saginaw box rebuilt with a variable ratio. The steering box in the '71-'73 is the same one that came in the Corvette and is similiar to what NASCAR currently runs. Here is a link to the guys that did my steering box:
