Do you have a repair manual? If not, it's time to buy one. There will be torque specs in that.

Yes, I had the socket on the crank and I was turning it to TDC, I just forgot to remove the ratchet. Then when I started the car, the ratchet got pressed against the fan and the momentum of the motor spun the bolt out.

That sir, is an awesome trick that I will save for later!

Funny thing, just this last weekend. I stabbed my dist. back in, and used a ratchet to find TDC. I doubled back to make sure I hadn't left the ratchet in there. Was thinking of exactly what happened here.

I have the balancer and pulley back on and lined up. Only thing I need help with is the routing for the serpentine belt. I have no A/C or smog pump, so there's just the power steering, water pump, crankshaft, and alternator that have to be driven.

Can't seem to get it back to where it was when I took it off.

Yes that diagram helped a lot thanks.

I retightened the balancer bolt, and put the belt on yesterday.

Decided to try to start it and she fired right up. Got the base timing set to 12 degrees, which was the original task at hand lol.

Thanks for the help everyone, I appreciate it.

I've intentionally put a socket/ratchet/breaker bar on a crank bolt to bust it loose, not on a Mustang, but on a Toyota. Set the breaker bar on the right side of the frame and bump the starter (disconnect the coil). It's just enough to break it loose. Now we know what happens if the coil's left on

Glad you got it fixed with no damage.

Definitely a big scare there. I'm glad the 5.0 is a pretty durable motor lol. I saw visions of my motor coming out, which is money I didn't want to spend.

Not to the wise, triple check everything that's been worked on before starting the car. I'll not make that mistake again lol.
