My car is a DD, and in the next 3-4 months i will be done with my suspension and be looking at getting the engine setup. I prefer to get the kenne bell blower, but my major issue is that i drive a lot, a LOT, and i want to fight the heat soak as much as possible so i dont run into problems. i have a couple ideas in mind i wanted to run by the lot of you, and a question.

first, starting with my question, Does anyone know of another company that makes a better intercooler for the KB unit?

now, since my car will be driven daily, all day, i need to fight the heat as best as i can. I am looking at getting the 6lb non intercooler kit, getting the intercooler seperate, and using the AFCO upgraded heat exchanger, the large resivoir that people drop ice into (no i wont be icing my setup, but it makes for easier fills, and is the largest, plus it looks nice), and getting the upgraded pump for the setup.

best outcome scenario would be the larger rez holding more water making it take longer to heat up, keeping the temp lower longer. then the hope is that with the larger H/E will keep the temps cooler longer by having much more surface area to keep the water temps down. the faster pump to keep the hot water comming out of the intercooler to get it cooled by dissapation into the tank then through the H/E.

i figured i could save a bit of cash instead of getting the 9lb IC kit and changing out everything else by doing it this way. thoughts?

also, dont forget my question about an upgrade intercooler (i havnt found one yet, just curious if someone else has stumbled across one.

are you possitive this is an issue?

the KB intercooler mounts beneather the blower so I don't think you are going to find an upgrade but obviously you could increase the resivior size but I would not do this unitll I had actually measured there was a proablem.

I would call KB and see what they say first. I mean just cruising around your not building any boost.

there is also a kb tech forum over at modularfords maybe search around there.

My car operates at the same temperatures as before the kit.

It's my DD and I drive in stop & go traffic in Tampa (HOT) on a regular basis. Hell I even got in a traffic jam between Tampa & Orlando in the middle of the day I moved about 1.5 miles in 3 hours with the A/C on max and never saw a rise over normal operating temps.

You won't get more heat soak than I do on my blower, with the KB. I live in the same area as you, and mine is a dd. So I think you are worrying about nothing.

i am not worried aabout the cars coolant.. the issue is the heat soak of the intercooler.. because of the setup and the weak H/E the water temps of the intercooler keep building to the point it is not reducing the intake charge by much, this can cause issues like detonation, and the like depending on the tune. pretty much, i want to fight the heat as much as possible....

but you are thinking i am a lil off then?

well my .02 is find out if there is a problem first. get the kit, install it. test it out

I mean you could always hook up a temp gauge to the IC resivior. see if you get heat issues.

I mean KB should have designed the IC to run on car that is driven. If they have done thier math right you are fine. not saying there could not be an issue i am just saying if they did there job designing the kit right you should be fine.

you won't build extra heat if you not in the boost and at cruise you shoudl not be in the boost so you intake temps should be normal just driving.

short story long if it is not broke don't fix it. If you do get heat soak then fixt it.

heat soak will always be an issue but not as much of an issue like the factory eaton cars get. Kenne Bell and Whipple's offer a way more efficient setup than say, an Eaton blower.

Even with aftermarket custom fabbed fmic's the air charge is going to heat up quickly.
I only see people fabbing up the huge fmic's on 2.4l or larger blowers just so they can have a larger element they can ice down in-between runs to cool the intake temps. Although I will admit it does look bad ass. You expect a centri blower to be under the hood

What about a meth injection kit from snowperformance? You may want to check that out if you're terribly worried about the temp. issue. I'd talk to someone at KB first though.

ehh, not going to go meth. if i go extra cooling i'm going to get a nitrous based intercooler freezer for my heat exchanger.

I suppose i'll just stay with the stock intercooled kit and upgarde as i go. seems nobody thinks its a good idea to go from the base kit and fix up the rest.

possible second scenario... i have no idea how much power i will eventually want. i have been kicking this idea around as well, but dont have any good info on it....

think it would be possible to pickup the 2.2 kit, run it at low boost (one to keep heat down)at around 400-450 till i get the cash for the block then get a flip chip to go between daily and azzkikr mode.... hell if i know. i like suspension better, i know all the info and most of the theory behind it and have a set path. damn power. think i will be happy with just 430 hp?

if your kind of tempted to get the 2.2, get it now, because later on you'll have a 1.7 to get rid of when u max it out at 480-500 rwhp, so if your thinking right now that this isnt enough power then get the big blower right off the bat. It'll save u some mula in the end. I'm happy with the 1.7 though, and no overheating problems on this daily driver.Nebraska climate is damn hot and humid in the summer too.

you may want to look into getting a heat extractor hood ala 03/04 Cobras. run Redline water wetter in the coolant. you may be able to run it in a a/w intercooler as well.
