ok so if the crossover tube and or heads is plugged w/ carbon then it wont affect passing tough cali smog tests? The crossover tube on the back of the engine has NOTHING to do with the EGR.
That tube comes from the smog pump and pumps fresh air INTO the back of the heads during COLD engine warmpup. The ports then lead to the exhaust ports on the head and the air travels down to the first pair of cats. The O2 in the fresh air helps the O2's function properly until the main cats warm up
One the engine is warm, the diverter valve in the smog pump setup switches and pumps the fresh air down the tube into the main cats down below.
Smog pump and cats gone? crossover tube can go to.
EGR is completely different. It pumps inert combusted gas into the chambers at cruise to effectively make the combustion chamber size smaller since inert gas won't combust again. Smaller chamber? Less fuel needed to maintain proper A/F ratio. So...at cruise, you use less gas.
EGR robs 0HP, but aids in part throttle fuel economy. if this is a race car that spends all it's time at WOT, but all means ditch it. But if this is a street driven cruiser, you might want to keep it and make it function properly
