Keep GT or invest in Cobra?

Well i am in love with my GT but it seems that after looking at a 03 or 04 cobra i am hooked on them.So i know that am only 17 years old and have had my GT for about year now so i know i shouldnt even be looking at those or actually wanting since i can't afford one. my ? is it a good idea to invest more money into my car because i am just wanting to modify it but is it better to wait not to put money into my car. Chances i am not going to afford that car till i am out of college so thats about 5 or 6 years from now please make suggestions thanks.

I think you have the right idea. Finish college, then reward yourself. Besides, insurance on a newer cobra will be next to impossible right now (I'm sure it's not exactly cheap for your '00 GT either, considering your age bracket).


There's nothing wrong with modding your current GT, but if you have your sights set on a cobra down the road, I wouldn't pour too much money into the GT. A few basic bolt-on mods should probably be sufficient and keep you happy with the GT until you finish school.

Remember, you won't see much of a "return" on modifications when you sell the GT; most late model cars are far from an "investment."

A lot of people wind up parting out their modifications prior to selling their car (because finding a buyer for a mildly/wildly modded car can take some time).

Here's my take on it. You are 17 years old. I understand that the cobra has gotten you all fired up and all, but if I were you I would enjoy your GT as much as possible. Do all the bolt-on's and save up and wait a little while until you get your cobra. Who knows what will be available to you in 6 years. The cobra may be slow by then ( I doubt it, but maybe.) . At 17 I could only dream of owning a cobra. Hell, it took me till I was 29 to get my first GT. Enjoy your youth, don't have all your money tied up in a car, and look forward to the cobra or whatever down the road. You have your entire life ahead of you.

29!! I didn't get my first GT until I was 39! My Cobra at 40!

I agree with both of these guys. Stick to bolt-ons for the GT and save your money for whatever the flavor of the week is once you graduate.

Im basically in your same spot.. Just a little different. First off, I dont own a Mustang yet. But, I wanted to buy this pristine 94 Cobra, I could afford the car (I work alot, and save all my cash) but I started thinking about insurance. It would probaly be astronomical. So.. I think im gonna hold off on it, and buy a GT, or a 5.0 fox body if possible. I allready passed up the 2 best deals I could have had, therefore I am dumb.

#1.. 1995 GT 5 speed, FULLY loaded red w/ black leather.. 85k.. 5900 bucks.
#2.. 1995 GT 5 speed, power options, but cloth, no MACH sterio.. 93k, 4900 bucks.

I suck.

Dude, those "deals" are about average retail in the Seattle area for those cars. Keep looking.

Wow, im moving to Seattle then, on the opposite coast of you its rediculous. Theres one dealer here that sells cars for insane amounts of cash. Example... 1998 GT w/ 125k, a bad throw out bearing and a nasty torn leather interior for 10k.. I asked the guy if he was crazy and told him mid-upper 5's for the car was in the right range.. he laughed, I told him he wont get any of my buisness and hung up the phone. But, the other dealers usually ask around 7k for cars in those years (1994-1998), reguardless of miles.. Its insane.

Insurance, gas (my gas consumption went up by alot moving from a 2001 GT), and mods on a 03-04 cobra will kill you financially- let alone the cost of the car.

Just do some basic mods on your GT and drive it into the ground till you finish school. I know ya want the nice ride now, but it will be much more important when you are 21-23+ years old to have a cool car.

I was hot on the 94 Supras before they became legendary. I held off buying it and was a bit disappointed in not getting one. But I didn't over extend myself and put me in a great position to get my Cobra 8 years later. Am I so happy I waited.

Something ALWAYS comes along.

Not to jack the thread, but coming from someone alot older, with lower insurance etc, is it smarter to just add a power adder such as a Novi2000 to the 2000 GT or go ahead and buy a used 2004 SVT cobra?

I agree with the others for a 17 year old, paying 2000 a year or higher for insurance is a bit rediculous for a 17 year old to handle (and I know plenty of teens that will be charged much more than that (almost double that for twin turbo cars).

I have a 2000 GT (bright green metallic clearcoat) with 67k miles on it, and have found a 2004 cobra nearby with 22k, and trying to make up my mind which is the smarter car to hold for a few years, like until 2008 when I may be able to afford a 2007 shelby. The GT is my daily driver go to work car, with only appearance mods and 3.73 gears. My toy/project cars are a 69 Charger R/T SE in the garage for the last 26 years, and a 91 stealth twin turbo I've had since 93, the tt has been excessively modded to over 450hp.

looks like your in the same position as me. except i KNOW that im stuck with the 5.0 until i graduate college-then when i graduate i will get a low mileage yellow 03-04 cobra. the value of it and the insurance would be considerably cheaper in 5 or 6 years.

im 19, and just got a 97 cobra with a bunch of mods and only 60k miles. im happy as a clam....lol

If you've got the money do it now. This way you pay for it while you live at home and you will afford it easier. That's why I S/C my car now, I got the money, and I might not get a chance to experience such a fast car when I am older. You don't know what life holds in store for you, do it now.
