How much clearance is there behind the kick panel (with speaker pod) and the sheet metal? I had a chance to hear a pair of Rockford Fosgate 6.5s today and they blew the 80 and 120 watt Pioneer speakers away. I'm just worried that the Rockford's are too deep.

not sure if they will fit, i have some high-end infinity's in my kick panels and it was an extremely tight fit. most aftermarket speakers are a very tight fit with the available kick panels. but if you make a spacer to but between the speaker and the panel it would fit find and would still look pretty clean. one more thing, those fosgates might sound good, but i guarantee you the tweeters will blow out on you a few months after you get them. even if you're not pushing them hard, they will blow out. had alot of bad experiences with fosgate speakers. their subs are good, but their speakers arent. i've had alot of different speaker setups in the past and infinity is by far the most crisp clean sounding speaker i've owned. just my 2 cents.

Dan, can you explain the spacer idea? I have never seen a post on this concept.

So you think the infinity's are better than the Fosgate? Best Buy doesn't carry infinity, so I didn't get a chance to hear them head-to-head. I might roll by Circuit City later today. I think they carry both.

I was thinking about an Alphine head (glovebox), Alphine 4 channel amp and Rockford speakers (2-6 x 9 and 2-6.5s in the kickers).

I too think Infinitys are one of the best valued speakers. Cardomain.com had a 6.5" component set (Reference) for $112 last week, so I bought some for mine. Im not sure if they will fit, but if they dont im going to just cut the hole behind the kick for room. There is already some hole there, so I may have to enlarge it. Also, with a good head unit, you really wont need an external amp.

And here is the link!

I think components offer the best sound. Im mounting the tweeter on the door panel somewhere.

19simmons65, for a spacer i was just thinking a half inch thick "ring", to put between the kick panel and the speaker, just to space it out a little so it doesnt bottom out. as for your setup, alpine makes great head units and pretty good amps, just replace those fosgates with infinitys and you're going to have a sweet setup. circuit city sells infinity, as well as alpine. good luck.

Infinity's it is....but Reference or Kappa? I had a chance to hear the Reference earlier today at Circuit City but they didn't have the Kappas.

I spoke with them about the spacer idea and they suggested the same thing. A ring of ABS.

They're also doing free installs on head units but they don't sell Alphine. Losers!

I agree that Infinity's are the best sounding speaker in their price range. There are 3 levels of Infinity's: reference, kappa, and kappa perfect. If you are driving the speakers with the headunit power, get the reference series. If you are driving them with an external amp, get the kappas. Whick kappa to get depends on how much you want to spend.

This might again give you a better idea of how to get some nice speakers into the kickpanels. I love what this guy did! Check it out:
