Knock when starting?

Most of the time as I start my car and the engine turns I hear a "knock" type sound coming from I believe the tranny. It cant be the clutch cause it happened even before I got the centerforce installed. It only makes that sound once when I start the car. Any of you know what the heck I am talking about ? and, How did you fix it? Should I just bring it to Ford and have them look at it. My car still has warranty on it. Just 33,000 Miles.

Oh man, does it go away when you release the clutch? Not sure if we have the same problem, but used to when I'd start it up, it would make a tapping noise until I released the clutch. Then a few weeks later I got the same tapping noise, but it started doing it all the time. Come to find out I had spun a rod bearing.

have someone watch under the car while you start it. i would be willing to bet its your exhaust hitting the bottom of your car.
Don't think so. If it was the exhaust it would be knocking pretty much all the time he's driving the car and hits a bump not when he first cranks the car up.

Make sure you check your oil.

Check my Tranny oil? How do you do that? (i am no mechanic :( )
I just had new tranny oil put in when I had a clutch installed not to long ago... I bet something is wrong inside the tranny itself.
Its weird cause it only makes that Sudden knock sound right when I start the car and thats it. Everything else seems fine tho...... I will definetly have it checked out by Ford before the warranty runs out along with my sqealing windows..And the cd player which cd's keep getting stuck as they are trying to eject......... :nonono:

Sorry, meant engine oil. Better safe than sorry. Your situation sounds similar to mine, and mine didn't end too well.

mine does that to its an auto when it sits awhile i start it it will make that knocking sound like 3-4 times and i don't hear it agian...... could be from the oil settling down into the pan or wrong oil weight maybe sure its nothing to worry about

I get a wierd rattling noise sounds like it's coming from my starter or something related to when I start the car.......only happens when the car is cold...and is worse or more noticeable when the weather is cooler....

I know this isn't the same thing you guys are talking about but maybe we can kill two birds with one stone :D

My truck started making knocking noises on startup and shut down. Turned out an exhaust bracket broke and slid down the pipe and jammed itself up against the frame.

I would be willing to be that it's your oil settling in your pan from sitting; especially since it only happens a few times when you first start up. What's happening is the the oil is having to be sucked back up into your engine. Get a heavier oil and a Purolator (I believe they are the ones that have the filter designed so that it doesn't run back out) oil filter.

Yep.

The only thing is that the exhaust brackets are different on his Mustang than on your truck. I guess it's possilbe though...:nice:

I have the exact same car as you, practically the same mileage, and mine does the same thing, only when cold. So I'm definitely interested in hearing what this problem could be. Kind of sucks when you're listening for that beatiful sounding Mustang start-up, and instead getting a rattling POS sound. Then everyone within audible range looks at you like there's something drastically wrong with your car.

i know the exhaust is what the knocking noise is on my car, but it only does it on start up. never does it any other time.

I just don't see how it could be my exahust....there is no way...I think it has something to do with the actual starter or something within the mechanism...not sure if there are any chains....or my timing chains  having a little slack? maybe?? I dunno...I am not terribly worried about it...this has been going on for over a year.
