i have a knocking sound coming from inside the drivers side valve cover. its when the car is at idle and when the rpms are dropping , it seems to get louder with lower rpms
or maybe i cant here it as well through the motor and exhaust. i changed the valve springs and rockers on my 92 5.0 but i dont know that much about the 96 cobra.
i only drive it once every week or two and it was only once a month for about 3 months . anyone have an ideas.

thanks, bryan

Is it coming from the valve cover or more from the front cover? If it's coming from the front cover your timing chain tensioner might be going out...I had one start going out at the beginning of this past summer and had to replace it...It's a pretty time intensive job to replace too, but not really that difficult...The valve covers have to come off, all the accessories have to come off the front cover and the front cover has to come off to get to them...I probably put about 12 hours into replacing them taking my time over about 2 weekends...

I know this is an old post but it turned up in a search I did and describes the exact same noise im hearing from my 98 cobra. Anyone ever fix a problem like this or have any more suggestions. I am also completely new to this type of motor as im used to the old push rod type. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I found a video that sounds very close to my engine. Mine just not quite as bad but it still sounds like a bad rod. What do you guys think? http://videos.streetfire.net/search/mustang/11/2d715f7a-5a64-487c-9750-985000e9ed93.htm

Ah yes, I agree... definately a rod knock. Oh well, chance to rebuild or replace and supercharge!

and that is the reason why the 98 is gone and i have an 01 now....
either dump 3-4k into the 98 which is losing value quickly or get into a newer car. depends on your $ situation, if you gotta lien on the car, etc. etc.
