09/10/2005 - Laps for Charity
A fan Favorite! You're the driver when Texas Motor Speedway opens the speedway to the public. Experience the thrill of driving your car around the 1.5-mile oval! Cost: $25 donation for each three-lap drive.
For a charitable donation of $25, you can do three laps on the Texas Motor Speedway. They run the cars single file in groups of 15-20. They have a pace car that goes 80-85 mph, and three safety trucks that follow the group. That may sound boring in written text but the thrill of actually driving your own car on the world famous race track is something you have to experience. The bank turns are steeper than they look when you're actually on it.
Here's how it works.... They set up lanes in the large parking lot in the center of the track. As cars show up, they stack them in the lanes. This is where you pay the $25 and sign the waiver. When a lane fills up with the 18 or so cars, they guide them onto the track. As you exit, those who pay the extra $10 get to have their picture taken at the Winner's Circle. Those who paid an extra $25 for another three laps get to go around again.
This works best if we all meet up somewhere near Texas Motor Speedway, then we convoy over. That way, we all get in one or two lanes and we all run together. The Sonic at the Basswood exit on I-35W is a perfect location for a pre-meet. It's about five minutes south of TMS. The last event ran from 5-10 PM. I'm guessing this one will be the same. We can plan on meeting at 4:30 again, just like last time. After the laps, we can all head to Hooters in North Richland Hills.
I'll post more details of the event as they become available. The first one this year was a blast!
Read the threads in the GTG forum on www.dfwstangs.net about it. Everyone is welcome.
