I am planning to transplant a 351 p.i. w/ an FMX auto into my 69 mustang from an 84 police car that had the gear shift on the steering column. My shifter is obviously on the floor and I dont want to change it to the steering column. What problems, if any, am I going to run into with the linkage setup by changing the location of the shifter?

I have to agree with 67efivert... I thought they'd stopped FMX production long before '84. In fact, the '84 probably should have had an AOD (automatic overdrive) 4 speed automatic. The AOD is based on the FMX design, but it's definitely different.

Anyway, I don't know what linkage differences there are between floor and column shifted FMX trannys, but if the new tranny is an AOD you'll want to flip the linkage arm on the AOD. This involves dropping the pan, loosening the nut holding the linkage, flipping the linkage 180 degrees, tighten it back up and put the pan back on.

Hope this helps...

well, that would work if i was planning on putting column shift in my 69, but i am keeping it on the floor, the tranny however is from a column shift car.

If it is true what you guys are saying about the fmx not being offered in 84, then it is probably an AOD that is modeled after the fmx, cause the pan pattern is just like the fmx style so i just assumed it was one. thanks for the info!

Dark is correct on his final paragragh about the column to floor shift. To convert the AOD to floor shift, Remove pan....... and follow dark instructions
