Lightening a Flywheel?

Any of you guys ever done it? One of the guy's I work with at a Ford dealership told me that will make your motor rev hard/fast like a bastid. I just wanted to know if you guys have done it, how it turned out, and if you recommend doing the same? Thanks

I assume by lightning a flywheel he means to have it "resurfaced" over and over to get rid of the "metal"...a much safer method would be to get an aluminum flywheel, but I personally don't like them for the street.

It will help them rev a tick quicker, but nothing radical at all.

If you mean shave off some of the stock fly wheel for the love of god dont. Get a aluminum one. And yes an Aluminum flywheel gets your revs if faster off the line and gets you to yous peak power RPMS faster. You could also get an Alum drive shaft and it would rev like a mother.

cleinterror - I have an aluminum driveshaft on the car. No difference noticed at all. I actually do not like it for other reasons, should have kept the factory one.

The drivetrain is all connected when the clutch is on "grab" mode...it revs the same...unless your spinning tires, then the "grab" mode is gone...

Back in the day guys would drill holes in stock flywheels. It lightened them up but risked cracking, imbalance, etc. This was on higher revving 4 bangers. It is NOT something I would recommend, esp with alum flywheels comin down in price.

We do it on 4 stroke dirt bikes and it makes a big difference but it also makes them easier to stall when putting around in the bush in 1st gear at low rpm's. But they do rev alot quicker.

shouldn't change performance while clutch is engaged at all. easier to stall when daily driving and quicker revs when you wanna throw up a nice exhaust note at a passing stang, etc.

IMO 300 bucks could easily go towards a new midpipe, set of injectors, save up for a b&g turbo hotside, etc.

They sell SFI rated lightened models of both steel and alum flywheels..

Like the others stated I wouldn't do that do a stocker...

when I did the T-5 conversion in my 67 cougar I needed a 157 tooth 28 imballance flywheel which are hard to come by cheap. All I had kicking around were the 167 (I think that is the tooth count someone correct me if I am right) 28 imbalance, so I took an old junk crank, cut the flywheel end off, chucked it up in my lathe, and turned it down to fit the 157 tooth ring gear. I also lighented it a bit.

As stated above I would not do this in a car makeing power (My old 289 maybe makes 150RWHP). But it was a good low buck thing to do if your broke like I was (that whole college thing) and you know what you are doing.
