what an awsome idea ill go do that to, i just got back from testing my new valve stem covers and all i can say is wow. if you want a pair go to your local school and steal the plastic ones off of 2 kids bikes

I see the advantage of having as much lightweight as possible, but something liek lugs I'd probably pass on. Something so critical that it's mandated by NHRA rules is not something I want to skimp on. I'd think your gains would be minimal for a whole lotta money compared to something like lighter wheels, or the driveshaft, etc.

or just taking out your back seat or even spair tire, for some people just cleaing out there car would make a bid diffrance. its just funny that someone would go to look for performance gains from lugnuts when they arnt close to runing out of things to make there car faster.

I have a postal letter scale and a lug nut handy. My lug nut is 1oz. the forged alum. ones on the site are .9oz. Multipy that by 16 and you have 1.6oz. not a big savings for $55. Forget that, but at least it was a legitimate question. Dont waste you $, or sacrifice your safety.

I do not suggest getting them. 7000 series aluminum is very brittle. For a car that maybe had 5 lugs and weighed less than 2500 lbs... maybe. As an every day driver with a car that is at least 3200lbs empty and has 4 lugs I wouldn't put my life on them. Aluminum is aluminum. Heat treatment and anodization help but aluminum is still a very soft metal. In all actuality you are better off getting lighter rims and keeping your lug nuts. You are not loosing that much in rotating mass because the lug nuts are so close to the axle... well on the axle... just not far from the center, there is not much leverage to work against you. Consider a set of these.

Or any titanium lug nuts in general. It will be much safer. With aluminum you only loose a little less than half the weight so maybe 2 lbs.ish. Is it worth it?
The problem with titanium is when it is put under pressure next to another metal it has a tendency to try to bond to it. FYI.

Thanks for the information, finally someone with something constructive to contribute. Now that I have some good info I will get the correct ones for my application. WOW, I didn't know I would open up such a can of worms with this thread. I must admit some of these are helarious. ENJOY.

p.s I have aluminum radiator- 5lbs, drive shaft - 8 (rotational), bumper shocks - 18 lbs, caster camber plates -5lbs, the rear coil overs save 9 lbs, Axle bone is gone -12 lbs, 99+ PBR calipers - 8lbs, No cats -18 lbs, aluminum underdrive pullies - 6 (rotational), soon to have alum AFR heads - 45 lbs, Qa1 struts -12lbs basicly if I can lighten it (safely) I will. All of this that I could remember right now = negative 100 lbs! on a already light coupe. Admittedly I am anal about weight but current lug nuts are rusty and I needed new ones anyway so I figured why not ask. Now I know. So screw you guys I'm goin home. LOL FAST! LOL

Thanks , Times 20 in my case but If mine are that light, I agree, it wouldn't be worth it. I don't know the weight of mine but I had them all in a pan and they seemed pritty darn heavy. They are some aftermarket brand. Some heavy aftermarket brand. lol

update: Being anal and stupid like that, I weighed mine and they came in at a hefty 2 oz each. I'm not getting aluminum but I can get lighter nuts than 2oz each. Thanks

Does the fact that the aluminum lug nuts and the steel lugs are of different metals and thus different expansion rates make it very dangerous to put a metal that is brittle as the only thing holding your tire on?

Reducing rotation mass is a good idea. That is why when someone has chrome wheels, it says "im about show and not go" it reall adds weight. On the other hand... Have you ever picked up a magnesium wheel? They are light, I mean real light, but wow they are expensive. I have worked on Porches and Lotuses, which come with these wheels and they also come with lightweight lug nuts, I mean they are scary light, but fragile, you don't want any power tool to touch them.

I just don't think lug nuts are worth it when there are so many other things out there to do for less money and with greater effect.

better switch back to 4 lugs. I'm not going to do a 5l conversion because of the extra weight of a 4 lug nuts.
Seriously, weight toward the outside of the wheel has a LOT more rotating mass than some lugs. The rotating mass of the tires makes the wheels look unimportant. Also, there is the driveshaft. it spins 3 times faster than the wheels, and can get a lot of rotating mass.
I gaurantee, that no matter what you do, my 2.3l will always have less rotating mass than your 5.0.

To save weight I use Helium in my tires. It is lighter than air and shaves off at least 5 tenths.

I had a big race planned with some camaro owner a while back. He had a list of mods longer then the new testment, it was going to be a close race. I was getting all kinds of crap from people telling me my car to was to heavy, so with the race 3 weeks away, i started, actually i stoped....eating. I stopped eating for 3 weeks and shaved 50lbs off my total weight. I won, but only by a tenth of a second....
