I put the Dr. Gas X-pipe on this evening, in preparation for a dyno day this Saturday. For kicks, I made a quick recording of what my setup sounds like at idle, with a couple of revs to 4000 (unfortunately the mic is cheap, and it was a little too close to the exhaust -- 5 feet away -- and it washed out because it was too loud ). When I listen to this, I remember why I went with a 110 LSA...

wow that sounds really good dave. Didnt you say you liked the H pipe on there better?

For the street, I like the sound of the H better overall. The X-pipe sounds real nice at idle, and at WOT (every time I go to the track, I get told by my friends that everyone in the bleachers starts saying things like "damn, you've gotta hear this Mustang, it sounds wicked" when I come up to the line... These are the high school kids, which usually are into the imports. I might be converting a few of them to "old school" V8 power ). But at part throttle, it has a metallic pinging sound, which gets annoying after awhile. And even though it's pretty quiet at idle because of the longtubes, it's audible for a *very long* distance at WOT. I just barely avoid getting kicked off the track when I go to the late night drags. I got a speed racing ticket because I went right by a cop at WOT (didn't exceed 45 mph either, 'cause I saw him by then... but he was a motorcycle cop, and did I mention that my car is *loud* with the X-pipe on? ).

So that's the long explanation of why I generally prefer the H-pipe. But it *is* fun to slap the X-pipe on for a few days.

Ahh i see. If you get the chance, you should post what the H sounds like, to get an idea. But that x pipe does sound great.. Ive always loved the X pipe sound.

Sounds nasty Dave.

What RPM does your car idle at? Even in the rare occurence that I can get mine to idle down around 750-800, the lope doesn't sound that mean...my cam has 111 LSA and more duration than yours I believe.

Ok guys, not to change the subject but I'm getting excited looking at what your cars are running because you all have similar combos and mine is gonna be similar too...except I'm not gonna have an FTI custom cam...I'm gonna get one when I build my 331. So, I think my car may actually run some decent times when I do my H/C/I. Dave at JD's Performance told me he should have a tracking# for my heads this Friday.

Hairy, your car sounds sweet. I'm guessing mine will sound something like that because I'm going with longtubes and an x-pipe also.

I've got the idle set to 800 right now. I'm thinking of raising it to 850 or so, with summer approaching -- when the A/C is on, it lopes so badly I think I'm gonna lose my fillings...

So what's the biggest factor of how a cam sounds? I know LSA, lift, and duration all play a role. A tighter LSA, more lift and more duration are obviously going to chunk more.

I would expect that lift has very little to do with the sound; the biggest factor is overlap, which is controlled by both LSA and duration.
