little more detail on my cold air prob

alright as a few of you know i spent a nice chunk of change on a bbk cold air intake, bolted it on today, *with aftermarket maf* ran super, noticable power, then it just quit,it started bein really sluggish, tried turing (clocking) the maf to no avail..threw the old maf back on, still was sluggish, im talkin cant even roast the tires sluggish, so in my frustration i come in here lookin for help, then i went and threw the new maf back on after the car had sat for a good 30 min, strated it up, ran great pleanty of power, then started gradually getting sluggish...heres me question, its a short shot cold air, i think they call it..the one with the air filter right on the maf...now is it possible that the less dense air from a warmed up engine bay could cause me to loose that much power?? its the only possibliltiy i can think of....any ideas untill i try it out again tommorrow morning??

lol well i did buy a fenderwell one fromt hsi guy on e-bay, and he sent me this one...but then i called and complained so hes sending the missing pieces.., so i jsut threw this one on in the mean time

IMO I'd go back to the stock air box, the "cai" offers no benefit over the stock box with a K&N filter less the silencer..simply because the stock system is more than capable to supply enough air for any 302 H/C/I. Now your problem is very likely fan wash from the cooling blade is creating a problem for the MAF to adjust correctly to the conditions it is attempting to read. Sell the "CAI" on ebay, put the stock system (or the AFM power pipe if you can afford it) and be done with it.

the only benifit from an aftermarket one I think is it looks better and dosen't have that accordian look but some people say that you want a funky airflow and some say you don't. If I find a cheap CIA I might get one just to dress up the engine bay a bit.

ribs have no effect..the 'volume' of air is easily provided by the inlet..you only GAIN when your providing volume of air that was insufficient..in this case it's not a problem. The restrictions that will benefit the system would be the stock MAF and or the heads/intake.

The fan wash Derek mentioned was my first thought too. MAF's often dont like fan wash or a bend right before them, and you seem to only have the former. You could fab a piece of cardboard as a shield, for testing purposes, I suppose.

thanks for the input guys, ill let ya know what happens,i have a feeling it might be someothing other than the intake and maf so im gonna look into that 1st...thanks again

I think you are drawing warm air directly from the radiator. The previous owner had a K&N stuck on the MAF and I have a feeling it drew in all the warm air it could from the engine bay. I've since used the K&N on 3 MAFs stock, 19 and 24lbs Pro-M and havn't had any indication of any of the MAFs acting up. I now have the UPR CAI to clean up the engine compartment(make room to relocate my MSD) and to get rid of warm air. I did notice the car being a tad sluggish after everything warmed up so that may be the case. Mine has the bend and doesn't seem to have any problems yet(CAI is new only a few miles on it so far) but we will see...
