im not sure what its called but the thing connected to the steering column and has the ignition switch attached to it broke. The gears inside are broken so my lock cylinder doesnt turn. I removed the steering wheel but ther is some type of bearing preventing me from getting the lock cylinder housing off. Does anyone know how to take it off

Two options here. There is a small pin that allows you to remove the cylinder but you have to have the ignition turned to the run position to depress the pin. Since you can't turn the cylinder though, your next and just about only option is to use a slide hammer. Have a good time...

Go buy a new one at autozone and there will be instructions on how to remove the old one and install the new one.

Not sure if you have tried to change the lock yet, but you could try to drill out the pin that is holding the lock in place. It is supposedly case hardened, so buy a bunch of bits and take your time.

or try a punch and hammer (being cognizant of the fact that you are beating on the whole column) on the pin. it might only take a light tap since the innards are jacked.

or you could try a screwdriver in the key slot to get it to the run position.
