Locking Hood Pins w/o hood latch?

does anybody use locking hood pins without their factory hood latch? Have any problems with the hood pins breaking?

Don't know, but the Plymouth AAR 'cuda didn't have a hood latch, just hoodpins. But it also had a lighter glassfiber hood. Don't know if the pins would hold the heavier steel hood, but they are basicly the same pins that is used for safty pins on heavy equipment for tractors and such.

I have seen race cars with the hoods held down by locking hood pins on all 4 corners for easy removal. I don't see problems as long as you have the hood pins adjusted so that the hood is held securely without a lot of play.

Just out of curiosity, why do you want to get rid of the latch?

i use only hood pins,took the latch assembly off,have had it this way for years

i already have hood pins, but they dont lock and i want to but locking ones.
a couple of reasons i got rid of the latch...i like the look of the front of the car without the latch behind there. and i also have an electric pusher fan.

i have a fiberglass hood also i dont have to hold down a steel hood.

here is a picture of what i have now, excluding the fan

Not to be confused with the "bayonet" type of hood pin. The "locking" or "Coke machine lock" type of hood pin WILL NOT, SAFELY hold a hood down, without also using a factory hood lock, or other positive hold down system. They just dont have the hold down strength, and will eventually fail. They are ment to be a locking system only.

thats what i was affraid of. any suggestions on other ways to lock down the hood w/o the factory latch?

I should be picking up a Glass hood from Allcarfan, in a couple of weeks. I have a set of "coke machine locks" ready to install. They will be used inconjunction w/factory hood latch.
It seems to me if you dont want to use the factory set up, "bayonet pins" are the off the shelf solution. Adapting a remote hood release, from another car could be another way.

I would think that pins holding down a steel hod would be stronger than holding down a fiberglass hood. At extreme speeds I could see the FG cracking around the pin.

10secgoal had those COKE MACHINE locks and at the track the hood flew half off... yes i said half off.

one of the locks release and half the hood came up broke off the rear passenger hinge- then the other release and when he slamed on the breaks his hood was haging over the driver side fender only by the bent hood hinge and spring.


sorry 10secgoal......but it was the funniest thing i've ever seen!

Don't depend on the locking hood pins to hold the hood in place. It is purely a theft deturant. This happens more often than not with the 5.0 community. Fiberglass being lightweight and flexes at speed causes the factory latch to pop open and the locking hoodpins can't hold it. The hood usually flys back into the windshield, breaking the cowl area, fender, windshield and sometimes roof. You are better off with some pins or a chain and lock.

Back to the AAR 'cuda again. They made it work 35 years ago, with pins and fiberglass hood. Now, the 'cuda grille doesn't allow as much air to pass, as an Mustang grille, and the AAR hood has four slots in the back to let out air. Perhaps his is the secret to holding it in place. Air pressure doesn't build up under the hood. The same is true for the '69-'70 Shelbys.
