I am really want to regear the car, its just not snappy enough around town. Ive been reading through the forum and it looks like most people like the 3.55 gears. I do a little driving on highways but mostly around town. Also what will I need to do as far as recalibrating the speedo?

Thanks

auto? manual?

3.55 is as deep as you want to go w a DD if you don't have overdrive. My opinion.

Recal speedo by changing the nylon driven gear (on speedo cable) in the transmission to a different tooth count. You'll have to get one to match (at least approximate) the gears you end up with.

There are calculators on the internet that factor tire height into it.

Take your number of drive teeth, (on a C4 with a gear ratio of less than 3.50, it should be 7), multiply it by the gear ratio, and then multiply it by the number of tire revolutions per mile. Divide that by 1000, and that number should get you close to the number of driven teeth that you need.

If you want pep, 'Don't fear the gear'... go for 3.75's .

I ran 4.10's w/a C4 and traveled on the highway, but not too far; mostly around town, and a few trips to the track. I can't honestly tell you about the mileage drifference, cause it wasn't a DD and I was having too much fun driving it. Which IMO is the point of our cars... to have fun driving them.

Here is a link if you want to figure out the RPM's difference between different rear gears:

You find out this information by taking your lazy little fingers and Googling it, that's how. Now that I have made you breakfast, here is a very easy link to click on:

Now don't ask me for your tire height!

3.55s are about the max you would want on anything that sees more than 20-30 minutes on the highway with 26" tires.

Getting passed while at 3500, and just listening to the car for 30 minutes at 3500 is annoying. I took out the 3.80, went back to the 3.55 and kept the 28" tall tires for the street. Effectively a ~3.25 ratio, which feels extremely slow but is fantastic on the highway. I actually passed a couple of people this last time out.

Bascially, I need a 5 speed . . .

not wanting to hijack, but im also in the same area as far as tranny and gears go. 2.78 open diff with the c4 auto. mine shifts at 4k rpms form 1st to second, and a little more going into third. i did the calculator and put in 3.55s and said i would be at 3976 rpms at 80 mph. hows my tranny gonna hold p to that?

As long as you have a tranny cooler to keep the temps down you'll do fine. You want to keep it less than 200*. I like my tranny temp to be between 180*-190*.

BTW, how did you calculate that RPM? That seems high to me...

Mine seems to hold up fine.

3000RPM at 60mp/h.

3.55's for the win!

Just be prepared for the hit to your wallet when you hit the pumps.
