if i lost the ignition key for my car can't i just call the ford dealership give them my vin number and they can figure out the code for my ignition and send me a new key? i figure this would be a lot easier and less costly than buying one from a junkyard or even brand new.

I don't think so. You'll probably have to replace the lock cylinder and use the key that comes with the part.

you should call the dealer anyway, ask them what to do... and then tell us so we know in the future

Need more info........... what year? anything newer than like 98 yeah we can usually cut it by the vin, earlier than that you are SOL, call a locksmith and they will do it, probably cost you $30 (well around here.)

I have had that happen to other cars(not Mustangs) and they did it no problem. Seems that you could steal someones car pretty easy that way.....look at the Vin on the dash of that hot 93 Cobra...call the dealer......lost my keys sir........Voila Got a 93 Cobra, for the cost of a key. Seriously though I am pretty sure they can do it. I had a old Toyota Tercel SR5 I lost the key, went to the dealer, after about 30 minutes of trying to find the #'s to input on their key maker computer......they could not do it. Point being in many cases I think they can. A paperclip will take the place of a key too.

its a 89 but yah i guess ill call a couple dealers tomorrow and see. i dont imagine they made a hell of a lot of different keys for ignitions back then. i know my friends door locks take the same key as my rangers door locks so hopefully ill get lucky and only have to buy a key. locksmiths can cut a key to fit my ignition though? didnt know that was possible.

Depending on how much its going to cost, you could always just change the whole ignition lock...if you can wait.

just go to a local bomgaars or another hardware store they carry ignition locks for cheap come with new keys and all. I dunno if they chaged the design from 79 to 89 but its worth a shot to look.

well if you do lose your key

all u do is go to a ford dealership show that it is your car and they will give you the key code then go to a locksmith and get one cut lol or u could make one yourself if you really wanna just with imprints but hard to do and lots of fileing

umm...i think the easiest way is to go to a parts store, ie. advance auto parts and buy a new one.....if i remember correctly its not too expensive for our cars.

ignition lock cylinder

i even took the liberty of looking it up for you

If you still have your owner's manual it should have a key code tag attached to it or written down somewhere. If you don't have that code, and it can'
t be cross-referenced from the VIN, then I dunno.

Don't waste time/money on a new lock cylinder, if all else fails and you don't wanna pay a locksmith just borrow a bunch of FORD keys and try them all in the lock until you find one that works ok, and have a copy made of that one.

You'll probably do my route. I recently lost my door and ignition keys. Call up a local locksmith. He came out to my house stuck a blank key in the the door brought it back out... filed it some... stuck it back in and filed it some more. Same process for the ignition key too. These guys are incredible. Didn't have to replace any lock cylinoids. (that would be annoying). He charged me $160 for the 2 keys. Do yourself a favor after you get it rekeyed. MAKE COPIES... LOTS OF THEM!

thats some funny **** stangman but i called the dealership and i got a few options. one dealership said they could get a key back to 96 model year with the vin the rest said only 97 so i can get a new lock cylinder for 30 bucks but i have to have a professional drill out the old one. i figure theyre just trying to get my money. otherwise a locksmith can come fix me one up at my house. either way they said itd probly cost around 100. my dad told me to get a bunch of ford keys from around 89 and start puttin them in the ignition and file them down a bit until one works then just use that one. basically i think im gonna look for the keys a bit longer before i do anything cause theres no rush. i did have a spare but my parents seperated a month ago and a bunch of **** got lost during that period of time so im makin 10 spares this time and theyre all stayin in my posession.

theyre somewhere in my house/garage/polebarn/wherever the **** else we had **** stacked up but if somebody wants to steal my car its insured so that wouldnt bother me at all minus the fact that blue books are way underpriced for what you gotta pay for a 5.0 but more than likely ill find them when my dad takes his stuff out of the garage cause im 90% sure theyre out there
