sorry dude. you can hone the cylinder and replace just that piston if necessary, and head. dingleberries for a few seconds to rough it up. take it to hot tank and replace the components.

at worst you need 1 piston,1 head, a hone for 1 cylinder, and a full gasket rebuild set. change to studs while you have it apart. lose the stupid TTY head bolts.

UPDATE- All the coolant is gone from the reserve tank and in the engine. Is the engine hydrolocked? If the intake gasket broke would that let the coolant in the engine and cause the loud noises?

Yes you can see the coolant and the level is overfilled on the dipstick. The engine only ran for about 40 sec total.

I don't get it. That really sucks though.

Coolant + oil is never good. Did you have something hooked up wrong? Gaskets?

Ive seen people replace an intake manifold, and get water in a cylinder that had the intake valve open. Then when they tried to crank it, it hit the water on the next compression stroke. Luckily in that situation the motor didnt fire over and make things worse, the water just stopped the starter.

Sounds like yours actually turned over with water in the cylinder.

Its a good idea to pull the plugs and visually check for water in the cylinders after an intake install, and if it is there, turn it over by hand to purge it out. Infact, it wouldnt hurt to do this now and see if thats your problem. Motor might be dead anyway, but atleast you'll have a cause.

When I swapped out my intake manifold one of the hollow sleeves from the bolt holes on the old manifold dropped down into one of my intake ports. When I started the car up it made the sound your describing plus I could hear the air going back into the intake manifold with every stroke. It sounded like an old steam engine. I took the manifold back off and looked down into each intake port with a flashlight and finally found it. Wound up with a bent valve and a dent in the top of my piston.

UPDATE - The shop called today and said that I threw a rod threw the block. They quoted me $3700 for a used 57k mi engine 6 mo parts warranty or $4800 for a new engine with a parts/labor warranty for 100k mi/5yrs. Does this sound about right? Do I have any other engine options for more performance in this price range installed?

Sorry to hear bout the engine, do you think there was problem with the intake gaskets, do you think your engine ingested coolant or did it get in an oil passage???? Is that was caused the thrown rod??

Two good choices below, VT short block list better components, but the DSS block is prepped better. Your choice, should be direct swap for you existing block..obivisously no warranty.. installation costs are going a little higher since instead of just swapping engines you are swapping blocks. Assuming your heads survived with no damage to the valves they can be reused. With the forged internals your bottom end would set to add a blower down the road and would have no worries so you can make big power then.
