Ever since i bought my car (96 gt) the low oil light has been on and off. At one point the oil seemed like it was somewhat low, but i thought was probably just because it was my first car and i was driving the hell out of it (flooring it everywhere and being a dumbass with it). But just recently the LOW OIL light has come on from time to time and every time i check my oil cold or warm its at least halfway up the dipstick, if not 3/4 of the way up. Any ideas as to what i should check or what would be causing the light to keep comming on, but at random times?

Just keep it filled to the max fill point on the dipstick. To check this accurately, let the car set overnight on a level ground like in a flat drive way or something. If its filled to the max when you check the dipstick, don't worry about it if the light comes on cause you knows full. It can read falsely sometimes like Red2000GT said. Now, if you smell burning oil or think you might have an oil leak and this light comes on, by all means, check then. Don't want to be out and loose oil while driving.

Alright i'll do that. But if it is a leak its a slow one at least....i might just do what whoever else is having oil leak problems did and wash the heck out of the engine and see if i can find any tiny places where oil is popping up and shouldnt be. Thanks for the help guys.

My low oil light comes on from time to time when the oil level is fine. I heard that the '96s had a problem with the sensor or something. From what i've read on stangnet, others with a '96 have had the same problem...

Same here my 96 does it all the time..it takes the reading when you first start the car..if you are parked at an angle you will usually see the wonderfull low oil light..parking on a slope does cause it..since you probably havent changed it yet I would get you 6 quarts of mobil one oil in your choice of weight and a motocraft filter and give that beast some new blood...I wouldnt use synthetic if it has high mileage just becuase it is prone to cause leaks as it will remove sludge from the seals that may be preventing leaks...
