Lucas Octane Boost - Cold weather "pinging"

Can only get crappy 91 octane fuel so I've been using the "Street" NOS Octane booster and it has worked well until it got cold outside. Can't get the "Strip" NOS booster in my area so I just bought some Lucas Octane booster. Actually costs more.

Anyone know how much the Lucas Octane Booster raises the octane? Because on the bottle it doesn't give any numbers...just claims that it has 3x as much boost as some of the other brands. I can get Amsoil booster, but I would have to order it just like the NOS.

I thought it was strange that I only get a lot of "ping" when it is cold, but I found out that the KB tune actually adds about 6 degrees of timing when the air intake temperature is really cold. Thanks.

yup get it retuned...or contact kennebell and ask them... if you keep letting it ping its going to damage your engine and cost you a lot more then just a retune will......I would just order the nos offroad booster its what kennebell recomends......

Actually, I think KB thinks it is "normal" and if I could get 94 octane fuel in my area...it probably wouldn't even be an issue.

Just something I ran across from the KB guys running a KB with a KB tune, and another guy running a KB with a "custom" tune.....

"With a blower your most prone to detonate when cool because the timing doesn't get pulled when you step on it. It's in the KB tech notes."

"Exactly. Depending on the timing tables and temps it could actually ADD timing..
In my own tables (not tuned by KB)..Anything below 50 inlet temps mine ADDED 6* of timing to the mix..
On a 20~30 degree day ,50 degree and below inlets are very possible. Ive seen it on my own.."

It is not so much that the KB tune adds timing. It is more that their tune does not change the stock program that does this . I believe it is because they can't lock timing and still have the safety of it getting pulled when it is hot. KB will pull some timing in your chip if you send it back. I now MPH offers two tunes for colder climate cars. Since KB offers a switch chip, I wonder if you could get a winter tune instead of shot out tune?

just because it's "normal" for KB cars, doesn't mean it won't crack a piston. they need to lower the max allowed timing.

Makes sense about the timing. I'm real happy with the KB tune and the numbers I got, so I really don't want to mess with what I have. I don't mind using the stronger octane booster during winter and if we ever get 94 octane fuel back in my area again I probably won't even need to add anything to the tank (I hope).

in this case, a retune will not lower your power numbers, it will only prevent your car from running too much timing.

you know those octane boosters do jack **** for your overall octane point right? they say they increase octane by 1-2 points, when in reality, its only increasing it by .1-.2 of a point. worthless IMO. either find a gas station that sells 100+ octane and put a few gallons of that mixed with 91-93 octane(itll net a better overall octane number in-tank, and not cost as much as 15 bottles of worthless octane booster crap), or get a new tune with less timing advance and a little added fuel to compensate for the denser/colder air coming in. i used to do the above to get rid of knock, i picked up 3 gallons of 100 octane(which was around 5$ a gallon) and filled up the rest of the tank with 91octane, which net me around 94 octane for the rest of the tank. itll cost a bit every tank, but if you cant afford that, you shouldnt be modding.

Where did you read that junk? Every single thing I have read shows that the weaker quality Octane Boosters are good for about "30 Octane Points" which translates to "3 Full Octane Numbers" and the better Octane Boosters like NOS Off-Road, NOS Racing and Amsoil Series 2000 Octane Boost are rated at "70 Octane Points" which translates to "7 Full Octane Numbers", yes?

Not worthless to me. If your ".1" Octane Number theory is correct...then why does that Octane Booster remove my "ping" - ".1" could not do it...so I must be getting a higher "Octane Number" from my bottle.

And, also, why would KB recommend that you "always carry a bottle of NOS-12007" to get rid of a pesky "ping" if it only raised your Octane from "91.0" to a "91.1"?

I thought about that and then I decided that I didn't want to dump fuel into my tank that has probably been sleeping in the ground for 9 months collecting moisture and rust from the bottom of the storage tank. Thanks anyway.

I've seen guys run NON-intercooled 10 and 11psi, and a varying range of intercooled boost from 9psi to 12psi on the stock internals getting 430-530rwhp for years and over 20,000 miles and they seem to say "so far so good" for now. Have also seen a guy trash his 9psi KB on his "first run at the track" so it's hard to predict what will happen. I'm pretty easy on my car, so I hope I'll be one of the lucky ones.
