That would be the last color I would get Maaco to pait my car. It shows more flaws than any other color. If you want a nice black paintjob spend the money and get it done right.

Its really not the Maaco paint job that looks like crap. Its the finishing work underneath. If you can prep the car well, and have them hose it for you, itll come out great. A friend of mine has several show cars that he has Maaco paint for like 200-300 bucks. He just preps the car so the body is perfect.

ive delt with maaco a few times and im am very happy. I paid 350 for my paint job all black which included the intergrated clear coat. A friend of mine paid 2000 (not a maaco job) for his and mine looks way better. I did all the body work myself and he let the shop do it. I think it all depends on the body work. Yeah there are better paint jobs out there, but i think maaco does a good enough job.

A few years back Hot Rod magazine did an article where they had Maaco paint a Fairlane GT. The magazine guys spent about 40 hours filling, bondoing and sanding before they sent it to be painted then spent another 20 hours color sanding when they got it back. Apparently it turned out great. My father-in-law has been painting street rods for almost 60 years. He'll tell you that its not the paint or even the spraying that makes an Oakland Roadster Show winning paint job. Its the prep and the finish work.

Maaco does a good paint job..they have thousands of dollars in their paint booth and guns but dont get screwed like I did into having the ass come out and look at your car and tell you..we'll sand down the car and fix all the surface rust and remove the hood, acid strip the paint(on the hood) and make it look like brand new..the car has been in the garage since oct and the rust is already bleeding through on the hood..I wish I had a garage that I could spend the time and DA the car to bare metal and do the body work myself..If you live in Akron, Ohio beware of the ass Earl that works at the Waterloo Rd store..you have been warned!

Like said above, Black shows EVERYTHING. If you want a color that doesn't show much get it painted white. If you dont know what your doing you might as well save up and have someone else do it.

Had my 86GT painted black a few years ago at Maaco. Funny thing is at that time they used Sherwin Williams paint. That kinda scared me. I prepped the body myself shot it in good primer and let them shoot the paint. It didnt look that bad but the bumper paint started cracking after a year and there tape job kinda sucked. I cant complaint too much for what it cost.

I hear the Maaco 20 minutes south of me does great work, but the one 20 minutes north can't do tape lines and generally does a horrible job. I think it all depends on which one you go to. Some want to do good work, and others just want your money.

Does anyone think its possible to do the prep. work with out a garage? And how do you tackle hammer and dolly work under the quarter windows, just remove the interior peices and work half in and half out of the car?

Not everbody can do bodywork. It takes time, practice ,patience and it helps if somebody who knows can show you the right way do the work. If your woried about the car being perfect macco is not going to do it for $400 .Black shows everthing! If you or the person should use cheap body filler or primer its likely that it will shrink and show right where you did the work. I dont know where you live but in P.A. we have rust and if not properly taken car of (acid dip or sand blasting) it will be back. In no time. I always say you get what you pay for. Adam
