This is the one thing I've heard about Macco paint jobs.....their prep works sucks. They probably paint more cars in the automotive paint buisness then most shops, but they lack prepping in order to turn over a higher volume. There are a couple cars around on the board that have used Macco and have been overall pleased with the results.

If your looking to stay with the original factory color on a daily driver and can do all the prep work yourself, then Macco may be an option for you. Each store is individually owned, so you may want to scout out local shops and take a look at them. Otherwise, I would suggest looking for a reputable painter in your area that can handle the project you want done.

As with what jzleach1 said, you should probably do all the prep work yourself. Macco prep sucks.

Here is my experience with Macco.

I own a 1966 T-Bird which, at the time, was not painted.
I brought it into a Macco and had it prepped and painted.
It also needed some bodywork, a new passenger side rocker panel, and about a 6 ich hole in the passenger side front fender needed fixing.

It took them about 2 weeks to complete the work. When I got the car back, at first, I was impressed. (Having seen real paint on the car!)
But on a closer inspection, I spotted some drips in the paint, and some overspray. I was kind of pissed that they painted over the exhaust pipes! And again, the car was in the shop for a WEEK!

About 3 months later, I noticed some bubbling coming from the rear 1/4 panels. When I took the T-Bird back to them, their excuse was that "We don't cover rust over 60 days!" So, no more Macco for me! But the T-Bird still turns heads!

My 2c...

StangVert2000,

Which Massachusetts Maaco paint shop did you take your T-Bird too? I have used the one in Somerville in the past and they did a good job on my old 1981 Datsun 280ZX.

Some shops are good and some are horrible from what I have heard.

I had my car painted last July 2003 at Maaco on Waterloo Rd in Akron, Ohio and the dickhead that runs it screwed me bad! The front of my hood had some rust that needed to be fixed and the guy said, "We will chemically strip the WHOLE hood and fix it like brand new and it will be warrented for 3 years..anyhow, I got the car back in 2 days(that raised a red flag too, they should have had it for a least a week) the hood looked good..well after a few months I noticed the rust that was supposed to be removed coming through the paint and the closer I looked I saw the DA marks that I did before I took it there(I was trying to do all the prep work and it was my first time using a DA so I didnt have it feathered out smooth..well that told me right there that they didn't strip the hood..I took the car back and the A-hole said they could re-fix it but I would have to pay more..I showed Him on the bill that it said that the hood was chemically stripped and He said it was and doesnt know why those DA marks and the rust is coming through..I should take them to court but It's not worth all the money..I'll pay the extra money and take it to a respected shop and have it done right..The A holes name is Earl, and do not deal with Him!! also, I had a couple small DA marks on the roof and they wouldnt even take the time to smooth them out..How could you be a career bodyman and not take pride in your work..If I knew what I was doing, I would have had that car looking sweet but I guess they dont give a fu$%!

Ifsomeone screwed my car up that bad from Maaco, I would take them to court. Small Claims court here in NY is only a $15 fee to file. I think it would be well worth $15 to get your money back from a job that looks like @$$!

"Uh oh, better get somebody else!"

I am planning to take my '66 T-Bird to a REAL body shop!
I am guesstimating that it will cost between 4 to 6k to get still repainted and ALL of the body work done, CORRECTLY! (Yes, even the rust!)

Oh yea, wanted to say that all Maacos are franchise-owned, so quality changes from shop to shop. There's a shop 10 minutes away from that does awful work, the one I brought my car to 20 minutes away from my house does excellent work. They had my car about 2 weeks, if anyone was wondering. Put the new hood, front bumper and wing on, filled in my decklid holes, and painted the whole car. No complaints.

Wow That's creepy!
I only focused on your car, not the graveyard! I did not even take notice of it! Really!
