I have a 1970 Mach 1, but it is missing the center console. I have located one in good shape, but I need to know....is there a difference between the console for an automatic and one for a standard? If so, is it just a trim ring or something that can be popped out? Thanks for any help.

The only difference is the shifter plate and these are available in reproduction.

a little rundown

I believe the stick is offset to the driver's side, the slushbox is centered. There is a trim overlay that is specific to one or the other, but I believe the hole is already done for either. Here is the MU link for console, only one available:

http://mustangsunlimited.com/itemdy01.asp?T1=F4536+01&Category=&CatKey=emustang

oh, oops, on further research, it looks like there is a top plate for 4-speed and for automatic. Look here and note the two part numbers available for 4-speed and auto:

http://mustangsunlimited.com/itemdy01.asp?T1=WG692+01&Category=&catkey=emustang

and here is the 69 top plate for 4 speed:

There are also 1970 top plates for manual or automatic. It looks like you could hook yourself up with a 69 or 70 console depending on which style you liked, but it does appear the manual is offset to the driver's side. Hope this helps.

That is correct. The stick console shifter insert has the hole offset to the drivers side and i believe projects closer to the floor pan than the auto shifter insert. Everything else is the same assuming you have a 69 console that is going in a 69 car. There are a few differences in the 69 and 70 consoles, with the seatbelt holders in the 69 console shifter plates and the cigar lighter in the glove box.

I have a '70 and the console is for a '70. Its in good shape and comes with mounting brackets. So from your replies, I understand that all the consoles are the same except for the shifter plate which can be replaced with one for an auto or manual? Also, consoles where standard in the Mach 1 Mustangs? Thanks. Pics of the console:

Heh, guess i could have read your first post that you have a 70 mach. Yep, you have a 70 console with an automatic shifter insert. Remove the two screws at the rear of the woodgrain plate and you can lift up and slide out the shifter plate. You may have to get a new woodgrain panel as well, depending on if you can save that one during the removal. Be aware that they sell the woodgrain panel and the woodgrain applique. You would need the panel obviously.

Woodgrain Insert

Can't find the deluxe 4 speed shifter plate on the mustangs unlimited site, but i know for sure that NPD has it in their catalog. You will want the one for Deluxe Interior.

And yeah all Mach's came with a console AFAIK
