I think the adapter bypasses your factory amps...

I did my system before, it was a pain. The system in our cars is set up for 2 ohms and almost all aftermarket are set up for 4 ohms. Your speakers will miss some beats, mine did. The harness that I got bypassed the amps. I ended up just running new (bigger) speaker wire thruought the car, added two (much much better amp, well anything is better that the factory) and a two 10" aluminum cone subs, and now the car sounds tits. W/ four infinity 2 way 6X8 w/ 5X7 holes, I can bounce a quarter about a foot in the air off the trunk when she hits. I would recommend running new wire and get a decent amp, you are going to save yourself a lot of headaches, IMO.

The PO put the head unit that's in the car currently. The adapter he used used doesn't use all the speakers. I'm not even sure if the door speakers are working. I'm thinking it's just the tweeters. And only the highs are working in the back. I was thinking of just ripping it all out and putting good stuff with aftermarket amps in there.

BTW, does the panel that goes around the stereo come out?

OK here's the skinny, I did mine last summer, and it sounds great, no missing beats, haven't blown any speakers (yet!!!) but I also don't push it to the max. Trust me it cranks very well. I have an jvc 200 wattx4 mp3/cd deck. It sounds amazing. I also wired off the deck a mtx mono sub in the trunk (just one 10). The new deck doesn't bypass the factory amps it adds to them. I used the wiring harness from Wal-mart (I'm sure the crutchfield would be the same). Now some people say to use the adapter also sold at walmart that lowers the voltage of the new deck so not to have any problems with the factory amps. I did buy this, tried it, and I did not care for it, so I took it out. Now My deck is a competition deck and I think its a 2amp deck, not sure if that makes a difference, it may, and I have no problems without the special adapter. I did however have to wire a resistor (can't remember size, do a search on the topic and you will find the one) into the factory amp turn on lead to prevent a poping sound when the factory amps turn on. This is because you have a 12 volt turn on wire from the new deck and the amps only need like 5 amps to turn on (That's what I was told from an old post). After I did this no popping sound and no problems. The system sounds great for being factory speakers, I'm sure the sub in the trunk helps out majorly, allowing me to cut down the base to the door speakers and just use them as highs and midranges. All I can tell you is that you may need the adapter depending on your deck choice, and the wiring adapter from eitehr crutchfield or wlamart. But if you don't bypass the amps you will get a popping without the resistors wired in. I'm very happy with the sound, and have had no problems. Hope this helps

Dr. Black: I wish you could come check my car out. I have plugs that I'm sure go to the rear amps that are just laying there. I'm not sure what adapter is used for the deck right now. Do you have any kind of pics of your wiring you could post?

Don't get me wrong the factory speakers are awesome, I put them in my 98 SHO and it made a world of difference, just be careful when doing this stuff so you don't fry your factory amps, just incase you want to ever put the stock mach .460 back in.

if you get that metra harness, dont forget to hook up BOTH of the amp turn on wires for all the amps.

checked the crutchfield site and entered my car info for the adapter and it says that it doesn't fit my vehicle...have an 01 GT

this harness will work, did an install in a GT w/ mach 460 and used it the other day.

I'm not too knowledgable about car audio, but wouldn't they have an adapter at like circuit city or best buy??? A few of my friends have got new head units for their cars and they bought an adapter with it from CC or BB.
