The narrow muffler is the magnapack, and I would get the magnapack cat-back if he doesn't plan on replacing the midpipe. I think it sounds great with the stock mid pipe.
The other cat-back is the standard magnaflow cat back, and sounds awesome with an o/r mid-pipe or an aftermarket catted mid pipe. Some people will say x-pipe, some will say h-pipe, it's all personal preference.
In my opinion, if he's going to get the catback he might as well replace the midpipe too. You won't likely notice any SOTP difference with a cat back exhaust, but if you change out the midpipe there are some gains to be had. There are 6 cats on a 98 stang and they rob horsepower.
anyone else have those issues with the magnaflows? those are the first bad comments i've heard about them...
i think we're looking for something thats only marginally more aggressive than stock at idle, and starts screaming a bit at WOT. My dad was initially gonna look at flowmasters but (as a guy who owns flows, and likes them, but.... well...) I think he doesn't want something that loud and really doesn't want something that drones/resonates like flows do.

I have the Magnaflow 15671 catback, the regular one and mine installed fine. You DO have to play with the position of the pipes in order to have it clear everything but this is typical on just about every system I have installed except stock Ford and that is only because the system is mostly all welded together so there is no adjustment.
Most after market systems come in 3 or 4 pieces that slide together so you have to take care when positioning them.
It's possible the person who had problems got a factory defect.
I like the tips and think they look great.
If he wants +1 louder than stock, don't even consider the Magnapacks as they will wake the dead.
I would suggest the regular Magnaflow and leave the H-Pipe alone.
They will be slightly louder at idle, nice and deep during normal driving but will scream at wide open throttle.
They drone a little under load at 2000RPM just like most systems except stock. It's the tamest of the bunch though by far.
You might also consider Steeda/Borla or Bassani.
They are both louder than the regular Magnaflow but not as loud as the packs.
It's just the thing for us older folks
Thanks for the advice. If it matters, his car is a convertible. Also, does anyone have recommendations for replacement cats? Or do those generally come with the midpipes?
The catalytic converters come with the midpipe.
