I recently got a 69 Mustang convertible in boxes. It has what was claimed to be a remand 302 engine the number stamped on the rear of the block is: KY61 80. No one seems to know what this code means. I have the car back together and have been trying to get it to run properly. I have gotten it to run but when starting it first pops back through the carb but then starts. It will run as long as I give it gas to keep the engine revved. It sounds and acts like its not hitting on all cylinders. Bare in mind that I know quite a bit about cars and all ignition and fuel parts are new. I ended up pulling the timing cover off the front of the engine to see if the cam timing was off a link and found that it is set 180 out. So I put it right and that made it act 180 out. Needless to say it would do nothing but pop back. So whats up with this? It will only run 180 out but not run right. Is it possible there is a cam from a 351 or something else in it. Does anyone out there have any ideas?

What casting number is on the block? What is the timing set at? Try 351w/5.0 firing order and see if it is better. Low timing will make an engine miss.

So, what you are saying is that the dots on the timing gear set were both at 12 o'clock? Not "dot to dot"?

The timing gear mark should be at 6 and the cam gear at 12. #1 should be ATDC and the pointer would have been at "0"degree mark. That should get the engine to try and run enough to get it adjusted.
Do you have your vacuum gauge handy for this initial set up?
