I was taking off the old Offenhauser today to put on my shiny new Performer RPM Air Gap when the 11th intake bolt decides to be seized and snaps in 1/2.
1/2 of it came out and 1/2 of it is still in the head
Does anyone know how well those easyout screw extractors work?
They are great if you over torque and break. A broken siezed bolt will imo end up being drilled out. You might get lucky, but I think it will end up with a helicoil in it.
I have not had a lot of luck with those easy outs in a situation like yours. You are dealing with fairly hard bolts. If it is stuck enough that it broke then I don't think an easy out will work. Your best bet is to call a machine shop and ask them what they would do or how much they would charge you to bring it down and remove it for you. Good luck with it.
You should give it a try to remove it yourself. If the bolt is not rusted badly it may not be as bad as you think. Use a good sharp center punch and mark as close to the center of the broken bolt as possible. Use good ("made in USA"), sharp, new drill bits and start with about 3/32 drill bit and drill about an inch deep or until it breaks out the bottom of the bolt. Slowly work your way up in size until you are just starting to touch the threads in the head. Apply a little heat around the outside of the bolt. The idea being to expand the metal around the bolt to help loosen it. Use the biggest extractor you can get about into the new hole but it must stick into the hole about 1/4 inch deep minimum. This is a very slow process, but they can be removed. If you get in a hurry you will break the extractor off and that would be very bad. The extractor needs to be a very high quality, "made in the USA" item for the best chance for it to be successful. Good Luck!
