Hey guys,

Has anyone had an issue with their master cylinder leaking from the top? Mine is six months old and it has a new seal and everything and it has messed the paint up I just shot. Any ideas or suggestions on a newer type master cylinder that might work better..

I wish I could be more helpful, but I've had some that leaked and some that didn't. It probably depends on the quality of the machining on the top of the casting and on the flatness of the stamped steel top.

The best solution is probably a modern brake cylinder with a plastic resevoir or the neat new cast aluminum culinder ($$$) from Wilwood.

happened to me. about 6 weeks of prepping the engine compartment when we did the car. replaced the master cylinder about 3 years later. leaked from the top and ruined the paint. i wanted to puke.

on mine i took out the gasket and reseated it then rebent the the wire that locks down the cap. took a couple of tries but i finally got it to stop.

when i repair the damage i intend on going to a late model plastic style with a screw on cap. couple guys on the .net site have swapped with good results.

I was hoping that someone else would have the info you needed on part numbers, but nobody jumped in, so I'll see if I can find it. The trick is that most folks that have upgraded their MC have done so due to changing to read discs. Apparently you need a larger bore if you are changing to rear discs.

We need to get a table going of both standard and rear disc MC dimensions, including mounting.

In the absence of better information, you might try a trip to the junkyard and try pulling a few Ford MC's that have the plastic resevoir's that you are looking for...maybe a Fox Mustang, a Ranger, and a Taurus. You will probably have to add some adapters to the get the MII lines to mate.

Here is some info on the Wilwood parts:

Wilwood Aluminum MC. Smalest bore is 7/8" which should work fine for us. Has slotted mount tab.
Wilwood High-Performance Disc Brakes - Master Cylinders

Here is their standard OEM plastic resevoir MC, but it has a really large 1 1/16" bore.
Wilwood High-Performance Disc Brakes - Master Cylinders

They also have a really nice MII geometry forged spindle with bolt-on steering arm and caliper mount. Looks strong! http://www.wilwood.com/Pdf/Flyers/fl193A.pdf

One really nice feature about Wilwood is that a dimensioned drawing is available for everything!
