Hey all,
new to the site,but i really need some help!!!!!!!!
I have a 95 GT AOD Convert. for some reason no one can seem to get the timing right,leaving me with a PINTO instead of a STANG
Well this weekend I found out that my timing was so low that it wouldn't even show on the timing gun,but it ran okay,just no power the way a 5.0 should!
It was turned up to 12 and when i drove it it started to knock and ping,so it was turned down to 10,seemed to drive real good no pinging,when I told the guy working on my car that it was real good he noticed that he had forget to put back the chip that goes under the hood that you take out when you do the timing and that wont let the car pass the Smog with out,but as soon as he put it back on it started to ping again,so he took it off and put the timing up to 15.
Is this going to ruin my car?
Is there a way to do the timing that someone is missing?
Thanks

You need to put the spout connector back in (chip), your car will run like kaka without it. You will more than likely have to run higher octane fuel to get more timing out of it. I would also clean the mass air sensor if you haven't already, that can cause drivability issues as well.

kinda odd,my car seems to be running better with out it,no knocking and pinging

The balancer was my first thought as well. Running at 15* locked-timing should otherwise be real sluggish.

Good luck.

My money would be on a balancer. Quick way to check:

Pop out the number one spark plug, get a long screwdriver and put it in the hole. Now turn the engine over by hand (15/16th socket) until the piston comes to top dead center on the compression stroke. (or as close to it as you can get). The rotor on the dizzy should be pointing close to the number one cylinder port on the cap. Look down at your timing marks, it should be at zero or really damn close to it. If it's not close then your balancer has spun.

if it's not pointing at zero...and instead pointing at like 30 or something...you can make that "30" your new TDC.......of course I wouldn't advise that....it should be replaced if it has spun.

Thanks,all of you guys rock!!!!!!!:nice::SNSign:
I will be fixing it on Thursday morning,can't wait!!!!!!!!!!
Till then I will be driving around the Datsun 510,the thing is real bad on gas
