They look as expected after 11 years of service. The dust boots are dry and beginning to weather and crack but still doing the job. If they break open it will allow dirt and moisture in and the ball joint will wear out rapidly.

To check for wear, support car with ball joints loaded. Clean off any dirt or grease on bottom of ball joint. There will be wear indicators protruding from the bottom of the joint. Measure the amount of indicator extended beyond the surface of the joint. If it is more than .047" your good, if less than that the joint is worn and needs to be replaced.

Are you talking about this thing? Measure from the bottom of that to the surface of the boot?

The reason I'm asking about these balljoints is that I have a clunk when I'm braking and turning quickly, and sometimes when braking in a straight line or going over a bump. I think I've only heard it on the driver's side. Just eliminating some possibilities at the moment. Tie rod end on that side, rack, and wheel bearings are new.

Yep, that is it. Measure to the surface it protrudes from.

More on my car: balljoint wear indicators are showing a good 80 thousandths. I have a very slight amount of play when I rock the wheel back and forth when it's jacked up in the air. Ron at the shop said if I tightened my wheel bearings anymore it would be too tight, so I think the play is normal.

I can't seem to track down that clunk when turning and braking or going over a bump. I'll probably ignore it unless it gets much worse.

Are you running C/C plates? Could it be the spherical bearings making noise? I have been getting a slight clunk in the upper right fender area of my Cobra lately and nothing appears to be loose. I was beginning to think it was vertical endplay in the spherical bearings in my J&M C/C plates.

Only things I know of are the box for over 100 then you got that ford tech guy that can go in and do it for you.I say let Chris do it or is ford that much? O and how well did it run if you went to the track?

The Ford tech guy tried but couldn't do it. I have to either get that expensive box or get my chip reburned.

I"m not running until next Wed. I wanted to put a few miles on my gears before I ran it.

I wish I did run it though, there weren't many people there at all.

Hey, do you guy's think I could gain anything from an MSD ignition? I'm kinda kicking the idea around, and not getting much help in 4.6 tech. Hopefully you guys can give me some better help.

Save your money Eric, putting an MSD on your car is just adding bling-bling. The stock ignition is more than adequate for most power levels. Now, add an intercooled Pro-charger with about 15psi boost and it's a whole new story.

Bling bling, you say?! I'll be there!

Okay, thanks for the info. Kinda what I was thinking, too, but I just wanted to be sure.

I was getting the MSD stacker 8 ignition but they sent the wrong one for my car.Yeah it worked on the 96 to 98 mustangs with only two coil packs.Well it got sent back and the other one was a big back order on it so I canceled it and getting other things instead. To bad TJ cant get them in before the races. I can blame Dan on that.

This will be my last time in Novice class. Also, my tires are in Jax now so they will be here tomorrow morning. I will be mounting them up on Friday afternoon along with doing an autocross performance alignment on the Cobra. Guess I will be giving them a workout at the Saturday practice.

Oh yeah, I found my clunking noise today. You can read about it here.
