Yeah, I can't speak for the earlier designs, but I know that that's what the MM has basically looked like from the get go. And from what I hear, it's more like Steeda has been doing the copying (actually just buying and then reselling them; my "Steeda" pullies are ASP units).

The axle is positioned by upper and lower control arms. They're stamped steel and are prone to flexing. Aftermarket LCA's help tighten up the rear by better controlling the rear end.

The Pro3i's are available with poly at both ends (street) or poly on the chassis end and a solid end on the axle side (street/race). The solid end is better for performance, but will transmit a bit more NVH to the chassis. It'd be like when you swapped the shifter for the tri-ax. You get a bit more noise in exchange for performance. FWIW though, the poly will transmit a bit more NVH over the stock rubber too.
 
I've had both, the LCA's with poly at each end and now a set with spherical bearing at the axle end and poly at the chassis end. I have not noticed any discernable difference in NVH. I did notice that the poly ended arms create what in essence is a higher spring rate, where the arms with the sperical bearing end do not. Consider that the poly bushing has to twist each time the LCA rotates through it's arc of travel and will offer considerable resistance. The sperical bearing end will offer virtually no resistance to rotation. The ride and handling with the sperical bearing ended arm is much improved over the all poly bushing arms.

Using poly on the UCA's is always a bad idea as they have to deform in order to allow for the different arcs of movement. But poly on one side of the lower's shouldn't create much if any bind as full freedom of movement is allowed at the rod-end.

This is ONLY true for the lower's though. Since the upper's are tasked with controling both axle torque as well as lateral movement, the bushings must be allowed to deform. This is why poly is a bad idea in their case.

So, in Erichterms, is this something I should invest in for my meager autoXing, or would it be better to spend my money on something else?
 
Good control arms are an essential part of any improved Mustang suspension system. The stock ones have way too much flex in them. This is fine if you want a quiet smooth ride, but not the hot ticket if you want accurate handling.
 
After I have a couple years of seat time, I'm sure I'll be able to understand it all. :D ;) :p

EDIT:
Are the adjustable ones necessary, or would non-adjustable one's work fine? Street or Race? I can't imagine me going back in and adjusting them at any point, but hey, what do I know? :shrug: :doh: :jester:
 
The adjustable ones are great if you need the extra ride height for slicks or the adjustment for weight jacking. If you don't plan to get dedicated slicks anythime soon, I believe the non-adjustables would be fine for you.

As for poly vs rod-ends, I'd suggest the rod-ends. Like Glenn mentioned earlier, they allow more precise control over the axle. Just be prepared for a little extra hum from the chassis. It won't be much over poly on both ends though.

Well, it's not going to be that bad. They are making me a turkey, but ya know, it's a lot cooler to be eating the same things. Mom now has to make two different main courses. :shrug: Oh well. No one is forcing them to be vegitarian. :)
