MGW Shifter, why the new design, is it better, or worse?

I see that the MGW shifter has changed...

Explain this one to me, and is it just a good as the previous design?

I wanted to get one, but someone said that they changed it.

when i made the first design of the shifter i was not really thinking of ergonomics or ease of installation because i really felt that once the owner set the handles they would leave them there except to change out occasionally from one handle to another. but i was wrong as it seems people like playing with the handle postion alot
the spanner nut and wrench design works very well but admittedly is quite time consuming to get set right.

so...i decided to try some different designs with the thought in mind that i would only change if it had the following features...

1. at least as much clamping force as the original design if not more.

2. easier to install and change/adjust

i actually tried a few designs that worked "okay" but i was not 100% satisfied. when i finished the above pictured handle and locked it down on our test shifter on our bench vise mount io knew i had the new design!!!

i locked this handle down with "moderate" force with the 2 locking bolts and then proceded to wail the living sh&t out of it with a 5 pound dead blow hammer. the handle did not budge and i mean not a fraction. the old design gave way after about 30-40 blows but this one NEVER gave in. now this is obviously a very extreme test as no one will ever submit the shifter to these kind of abuses but i did it to test the strength of the design.

you guys need to remember when my shifter first came out everybody was all over it criticizing the design and strength with no basis whatsoever. and then when they finally started getting into peoples' hands ...well all you need to do is read the reviews on the net

i guess you guys just will need to have faith in my engineering . this shifter handle design is nothing more than an evolution of a good design due to customer feedback.

we also made some other minor improvements too, that do nothing but make the product that much closer to perfection!!!

Hey! I got my shifter in today. I was also curious about the new design. From what i had read i was expecting some changes but i was suprised to see something so radical. I have no problem with the change seeing as how you've tested it out. I love the feel of this thing. I will be installing it tomorrow! I can barely keep from pulling the GT into tonight, lol. Thanks alot for the info and take care!

George - don't know you, but thanks for posting. It's great when we get it 'straight from the horses mouth' so to speak. The shifter looks marvelous and is clearly a very robust design - I've joked around on the threads that you ought to market a clear boot so people can see the shifter.

Don't know if I can use one in my application or not; the 5.0/tranny are in a different chassis. Does this take up any more room than a stock shifter, or a B&M unit? I had to marry the stock Mustang handle to the B&M base unit in order to move the handle back far enough to allow me to insert CD's into my player when in 5th gear. I'd hate to order only to find it won't fit in mine.

Are you in the Augusta area?

yes my shop is in augusta. i do not think the shifter takes up any more space than the stock unit. the handle is just much beffier so it looks bulky. the boot actually slips over even the red handle nicely.

George. You seem to have done a marvelous job with this shifter. I, as a mustang guy, appreicate your effort to make nice parts for the stang community. I hope it makes you rich man. Im gonna be after one here shortly after I get some work thats in progress (3.73 gears) done. Great job man...

what im really curious about, is how does this shifter compare to the Pro 5.0. Ive driven a Pro 5.0, and ive driven stock shifter mustangs, and ive driven Tri Ax mustangs, all attached to a T5. Now so far my favorite has been the pro 5.0. The shifter is beefy, is pretty much straight, and ive never missed a 2nd to 3rd shift, because i can just push straight up and it slips right into 3rd.

how does the MGWLTD shifter compare to the pro 5.0? are the throws any shorter? same ease of finding 3rd? what would be the reason to trade my pro 5.0 in for the MGWLTD (besides the fact i like the MGWLTD design?)

I'm also really curious as to how this new shifter compares to the Pro 5.0. I'm just about to purchase either your shifter or the Pro 5.0. Does the MGW have a third gear assist like the Pro 5.0 does? That's what I'm really interested in, I hate missing 3rd. If I ordered a MGW shifter now how long would it take to get it?

the centering mechanisms on the MGW are supposed to be the stoutest out there. So yes, it has a 2-3 "shift assist" as you say.

I also agree that the design has changed for the better. I have yet to install the shifter but the more i look at it and check out the adjustment (and ease thereof) the more i like it. I only wish the main shaft had been re-designed to match the new handle. It still has threads for the spanner nut. I feel like this prevents a bit of surface area contact with where the handle clamps down. I'm sure MGW will revise that in the next version. I'll be installing tomorrow if i get a chance.

here are some reasons why i feel that my ( MGW) shifter is the best on the market....

1. it currently offers the shortest throw.

2. the third gear offset spring is the most effective due to special progressive spring design i incorporated.

3. the MGW shifter base is hard coat class 3 anodized not just cosmetic anodize. hell most of the shifters on the market are RAW aluminum. VERY bad idea...

- raw aluminum will flake as the pivot ball works back and forth and contaminate the grease in no time.

- once the aluminum gets in the grease the friction rises and the tranny fluid may also get contaminants in it.

we use a LARGER diameter pivot ball than anyone for a reason. it gives better feel and smoother shifts because of more surface area between the ball and base. this gives a very nice shift feel and postivie shifts.

now on to the MAIN reasons for my shifter...

PATENT PENDING center shaft assembly design that absorbs most if not all tranny vibration and buzzing, noise etc. the only shifter on the market that utilizes this technology and the only one that ever ( LEGALLY) will. this shifter in most cases is as quiet or QUIETER than stock!!!!!

PATENT PENDING shifter handle design that allows full rotational adjustments
and does NOT tilt the knob at all. it stays straight up for the best feel.

i know there are other shifters out there and i guess those that think the others are better will never know. but i can tell you one thing ..there is a reason we only sell direct. we put 175.00 worth of technology and quality into this shifter. not 100 dollars and sell it wholesale just so you can pay 175.00 retail. think about it
