I just got my 2004 cobra, and have never owned a modular car before. Before I bought it, I did the usual checking to hear for the head tick and heard nothing. I don't think its the "tick" issue (louder at the passenger side than driver) but just wanted opinions on the way the car sounds. (Just seems a little loud to me) Here is a vid, but its in the garage so the sound maybe messed up a little.

Sounds like there's been some detonation damage? Take a vid of just the engine outside....

I don't know if the sound is a little diistorted because it's in your garage... but you're right, that doesn't sound right. As requested above, can you get it out of the garage and film just the engine while running?

Thanks guys, I will get that video tomorrow. I watched the video again, and it does sound a little distorted, the sound I was referring to sounds more like a valvetrain type noise, and the vid seems to weed it out a little. Some additional info I forgat to add: all of the guages look ok, normal temp, never overheated it, normal oil pressure, and I've only gotten on it twice, and didn't take it over 5800ish, so its not like I've been beating on it.

I'm hoping its nothing, but I have a warranty if there is something wrong with it, just sucks that this crap happened so soon.

Well from what I heard it's NOT the "Tick". I consider myself an expert in this specific area because my car had the drivers head replaced twice by Ford for the infamous "Head Tick" so I know exactly what it sounds like and what I hear in your video is not it. You video sounds like marbles in a can so it could be piston slap (does the sound go away after the car is warm?) or SC bearings possibly, maybe even a bearing in one of the idler pullies... Better vid will help determine though...

how many miles and can you tell if the previous owner modded and put it back to stock when sold?

Thanks for the replies guys,

I haven't been able to get a video yet (been really busy).I took the car to a mustang shop here locally ( www.bradscustomauto.com ) and had their main tech look it over. I don'thtink the car sounds as bad in person as any of the videos, and think that the camera may have had some distortion, but the guy said it sounded normal. My main concern was with the ticking type noise, and he said it sounded normal, told me it was a mix of some valvetrain noise and injectors. I will get a vid of the car outside the garage probably by the weekend, just to get a second opinion from you guys, but I think I'm ok. (hopefully)

As far as it being modded in the past, I got it from a dealership, they asked the owner to call me (missed the call) and advised that the owner called them and told them it was never modified except for the flowmasters, but who really know's.

Hey Uncle Meat...If there was a "marbles" type noise, then went away after warm up and never made the noise after that for the day what do you suspect? Chain slap? It has steeda timing adjuster and pulley kit on it so its hard to tell where its coming from. Only happens on cold days, never on warm mornings?? Thanks for info. FYI this 97 has only 20k on the odometer! I have buzzed it but in proper fashion.

UM has been banned...

You might consider starting a new thread on your problem. However, my take is that what you are hearing is a failing throw out bearing or pilot bearing. On cold days they will "growl" when starting to fail and that is what your problem sounds like to me. Try pushing the clutch in/out does the sound of the noise change?
