I went out in the garage for a few hours today until it got too cold. I'm still dumbfounded with this alternator charging problem. Just for review, it's burning out the printed circuit on the instrument cluster, and causing the alternator not to charge. It is burning out the circuit between the resistor and the pin that goes to the red wire with the green stripe. I assume that wire is the problem. I tested all the fuses in both fuse boxes, and they are all good. When the key is in the on position, there is no 12v power going to that wire. I disconnected both ends of the battery, and tested that resistance on that pin. There is no resistance on the positive side, and almost no resistance going to ground. I expect there to be some continuity between that pin and the ground, because of all the relays and solenoids in the car, but there is almost nothing. That red wire with the green stripe doesn't go far behind the cluster before it branches into 3 wires, all the same color code. Any idea where those 3 wires branch off into. I went down to the fuse box under the dash, and there are is almost no resistance between almost every fuse and the ground. Any other ideas.
If you need to temporarily do so, you can disconnect the red/lt green wire near the regulator. Run a fused wire that's hot during cranking and running to the regulator. Put a 500 Ohm resistor (and panel light in parallel if you desire) on this wire.
