Flores got shafted and Ross is a POS not just for firing him, but for trying to pay him to lose.

That is by far the exception. And those coaches most likely were offered extra duty pay and arm twisted into it.

The coaching courses are offered to anyone, but the great coaches almost always have experience in the sport (or a similar sport) and natural ability with motivation or teaching.

Edit: for a long time, back before high risk testing and national standards, standard phrases in ads for teaching positions were “Coaching Available”, “extra duty pay with qualifications” or similar. It meant the school was looking for coaches and would let them have a classroom position. That’s how a lot of those not great players you remember from school ended up with coaching duties.

I think there are a lot more professional coaches (people who set out to coach for a living) than you think there are.

I'd also be willing to bet that a player has a better shot of landing a job as a sportscaster than a coach. And I don't mean just fooseball.

Playing is not coaching: why so many sporting greats struggle as coaches

Just because you were good at sport does not mean you can coach without furthering your qualifications and experiences.

The most successful Collage Basketball Head coach over the last 23 years never played basketball in Collage or the Pros. He has won almost 84% of the 779 games he has coached.
He is a great people person and knows how to teach and motivate young men who come to his program. That skill does not require having played the sport. at all.
There are many examples of successful coaches who never played the game. Just because you are an excellent athlete does not mean that you relate well with others or can communicate and teach.

I want to see a great collage B Ball player. (Auto incorrect in action. )

That someone never played the sport at all is an extreme to the absurd example. It’s difficult to demonstrate those skills if you never developed any of them, even as a kid. No, being a coach does not require having played on the pro level, but teaching good form and strategy to an state or league championship team is a heck of a lot easier if you know how to do it and can at least remember the kinesthetics of the activity.
So let’s go with the premise that there are lots of youngsters who dream of being a coach and do not enjoy playing the sport first. The question then becomes, shouldn’t the pool of highly qualified candidates reflect the ethnic make up of the population the US?
By the reasoning that you do not have to be good at a sport to coach well, we should have short, scrawny and clumsy coaches of every color and ethnic background with the mostly white head coaches. I do not see it. Maybe with more info on the complete coaching staffs, it might prove true.

That is NOT what I am saying, I am saying shouldn’t the highly qualified pool of coaches be similar in make up to either the athletes in the sport or the country as a whole? There is a big difference between that question of merit based hiring and quota based hiring.

Demographics shouldn't have anything to do with it.

Hopefully, team owners hire those folks that they think have the best chance of getting their team to Daytona.

I don't personally walk into an activity and start counting skin colors to see if the ratio is appropriate for my purposes. It's irrelevant.

I refer you to posts 1-4 in this thread for the problem.

A view similar to your attitude is what should be used, but I do not think it is.

Let me ask it in simpler terms, why is it the owners think only white head coaches can get the job done? More colleges have the “a great coach is a great coach” thing figured out.

Where did this come from? What team owners think this? I'm asking. I don't know any of them.

At least try to keep up with the conversation.
Better yet, besides the Olympics, go back to watching whatever sport season it is now, B Ball, Hockey or ice turtle racing.

And,
Here are the rules for the frozen turtle target racing. It’s called curling, and unlike Mario Bros, they are stones.

I don't know that this is true.

I am still trying to figure out how being a good athlete in any way makes somebody a good coach. They are two totally separate career fields.

Athletes aren't hired for their coaching ability and coaches are not hired for their athletic ability. To try and conflate the two in order to make some argument about racism is disingenuous.

I would find it difficult to believe that a team owner would hire a coach based upon how many touchdowns they made. Particularly when an alternate candidate worked their way up through maybe, coaching league sports, then maybe HS, then college, then perhaps eventually pro with a proven record of success as a coach?

I can only imagine that competition for those jobs is fierce.

Coach Applicant: "I scored 42 field goals".
Interviewer:

That's not to say that there aren't players who are or can become great coaches. I imagine that [contacts] would be the advantage there but it's not a substitute for the skill necessary to be a coach. It's a full-blown career change and requires a lot of work. A successful pro athlete has spent much of their time in other pursuits (being an athlete).
