How are you going to paint in thoes tight areas with all of thoes wires hanging there?

When painting an engine bay with rattle cans do you guys use(other than preping and priming) a couple of layers of gloss, flat colors with layers of clear or gloss and clear? Because I touched up a couple of spots under my battery and I preped, primed, glossed and cleared but as soon as the clear touched the dry gloss, the paint started cracking like dry skin??

I've only knows people to use car paint to paint their engine bays... not spray paint
