I have had an issue with the trans/engine lining up straight since purchasing my car. There is actually a custom made (hacked) shifter boot around the shifter because the top of the shifter mechanism would not clear the stock plastic trim around the shifter boot because it's pushed way over to the passenger side of the car. Just recently got done having shredded torque boxes shored up, so I know the car has been run pretty hard in the past.

To make a long story short, I crawled under the car for an hour to try and figure out what the problem is, and saw something that didn't look right. The hump that the drivers side motor mount attaches to and the steering sector shaft runs through has a noticable weld running across the bottom (looking at it from the back where the steering shaft is visible); as if it was cut out and replaced at some point. It was a pretty clean weld, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't factory and the other side wasn't like this. Does this sound like something that would have been shoddily repaired had a motor mount pulled out of it's mounting pad? Can anyone with a car on jackstands or know their way around the subframes of these cars confirm that there should NOT be a weld around the base of this hump? If this is indeed the problem, what recourse to I have besides finding another shell and swapping everything over? I'm really sick over this after just doing a lot of working repairing the torque boxes and doing a five lug conversion to this car.

I've noticed that my stock kmember is welded up all over the place too. I went out there to see what you are talking about. I do not see any large lines of welds. Pictures would help. I don't have a camera... My welds arent clean, it looks like someone gave a stick welder to a stoned monkey....

On a separate note, where have ya been bro?!? long time no see....

That sucks, you have to remember that our cars are rather old, and alot could have happened over the years. If your K-members have been rigged, I wouldn't even mess with it because much better aftermarket units are not too expensive and you could probally pick up a stocker for almost free, not that big of a deal to replace one either.

Yeah, if it turns out that the k-member has indeed been "repaired", I'll be purchasing an aftermarket unit pretty quickly. I'll take pictures as soon as I can get a friend out here with a digi-cam. The weld I'm referring to is on right under the steering sector shaft on that piece that surrounds it and the motor mount bolts to the top of; the weld pretty much goes all the way around and is easy to see.

BTW IndyBlk, work has kept me pretty busy this summer in WI. I'll be around a lot more come November when I'm back in FL over winter.
