Another MPG question

Hey! Here's another wacky MPG question!

So I just filled up my new '07 for the 2nd time. The "low fuel" warning message was displayed...and said about 38 miles to empty. I fueled up, but only 10.XX gallons were pumped before the pump stopped. I hit the lever again, and it stopped like 2 seconds later.

I forget the exact trip odometer reading, but when I divided the trip odo (200+ miles) by the 10 gallons pumped, I got like 21.XX mpg.

I know our tanks (S197) are 15 gallons....so I'm puzzled when I saw the needle a couple hairs above "E" and the 'puter was telling me 38 miles left! (I guess I had 5 gallons left?? To go 38 miles?)

When I got in the car, the 'puter said something like 265 miles to empty (if I recall, the first time I filled up it said like 315?). The needle didn't quite peg the "F" mark...it's about 1/16" away.

Can anyone help me figure out this crazy math?

When the computer shows 0 miles to empty, you should have roughly 1.6 gallons of gas left, if that helps...

OK...

I think I figured it out.

The car doesn't like fuel pumped into the fuel tank too quickly...it was shutting off prematurely.

I went to the gas station today and was able to get about 2.7 more gallons in the tank. The computer read "316 miles to empty" which is what I remember from the first time I filled up.

Problem solved.

I've never noticed in the day time with no lights on, but at night with the dash lights, the gas gauge will all turn red when you approach 10-15 miles to empty. Pretty cool.

Thats a really cool feature. I've never read about it before on any spec sheet. Pretty niffty.

Seems like more and more cool features keep showing up with the interior upgrade gauges. They should really talk about them more on the Ford website.

i dont think its good to let your fuel run that low... I did mine before and then my throttle position sensor went bad. I can't say for sure it was my low gas but thats when it started messing up. Luckily it was fixed under warranty for free

Hey, I wonder if the other gauges go red also? Think the temp goes red if it gets too hot, or the batt goes red if the voltage drops too low?

Nearly 100 tanks in my Stang and very, very seldom do I fill up before I get the low fuel warning. I tend to do it before it says 20-30 miles to empty.

I agree it's not a good idea to let the fuel level get too low before a refill. Over here in earthquake country there's no guarantee your friendly local gas station will be able to fill you up if it gets real shaky all of a sudden.

Seems to me there is a TSB about gas tanks not wanting to take on fuel when they are not near empty. That may be a reason to fill only when near empty, but an even better reason to visit the dealer and complain.
