Hi, thinking of buying 1996 Mustang GT (V6cyl) (3.8). Pristine condition but high milage, 147,000 miles. Price is $3,800. Do you think this is a good deal? Does high milage matter on this car? Please email me or post here. I appreciate all your help. email: nickgarren@hotmail.com

As long as the maintance was kept up I would buy it for a daily driver. If this is your first Mustang I would say hold off and get a V8. You'll regret it if you don't.

Are you sure about that car? The '96 GT comes withe the 4.6 V8 only. The base mustang came with the 3.8 V6. Having said that, if it's a GT, go for it.

Yes I posted wrong -it's not a GT, 96 mustang coupe 147,000 miles, V6. It's for my daughter so I'm not looking for speed performance, just for the looks of the car. Will be used daily as she attends college. What is your opinion on buying this for $3,800. Pristine shape. Thank you again.

I think he ment the price sounds to high for that many miles. Honestly I wouldent have to much faith in a 3.8 V6 w/ 150,000 on the ticker. There motors are not and reliable and as strong as the GT 5.0 Version. If your willing to spend in the ball park range of $4000 then you can prob find better deals then that. Then again we cant see the car, it may be in pristine shape but how does it run? whats the maintence record.......thats what you need to be concerned with.

you can find v6's with 100k for about 3k in good condition

it's true
honestly, what i would do?

for that car, I would offer like $2500
and let them sit on it for awhile.

chances are, they'll take it.

i;ve always heard that the 232's are actually pretty good motors, the 94-95's had the head gasket problem, but the 96+'s were good and reliable. I've heard the bottom end on those things are bullet proof.

I don't know when the head gasket problem stopped for the V6's, but you need to find out. They were popping them like hotcakes.

Like said earlier, you will be much more happy with the 4.6L then the 3.8L. I bet replacement parts are cheaper. Plus the car is a heck of a lot more fun, even on road trips. Don't need to downshift when you are on the freeway going uphill.

They just seem to fall apart faster. I don't know if that is a bias or not, but that is just what I have seen locally.

just hold out for something cheaper or less miles, that price is kind of high

Trust me you dont want a 150k stang unless it has been WELL taken care of

Price sounds high considering I picked up a 94 GT with 105K miles for 3K last fall.

The 3.8 IS a good motor, it's pretty sporty for a V-6 and gets decent gas mileage. Some of them did have head gasket problems, but Im not sure when they fixed that.

:OT: About the head gasket problem. I just dealt with that. My moms 95 ford windstar (aka crap star) 3.8L (same motor in the stang but different powertrain) just blew a head gasket at 58k miles. I didn't know it was a common problem. Its also on its 3rd tranny and unfortunately neither of the first 2 went under warranty. That car is such a piece of crap. I havent had a problem with a single ford part on my car (except the egr valve at 138k miles) and my moms car is going through major power train parts like water. What kinda crap is that... Sorry I started venting. It happens whenever I mention that piece of crap.
