... that was wierd, first post went through with nothing but the icon...... anyway. this is a tech question that borders on talk - but i have noticed that the regulars on the tech forum tend to give more dependable information. i have a 90 lx. i have recently bought a new sony xplod cd player. i am replacing a sony xplod cd player that i have used for over 6 years. it has performed flawlessly over thousands of hours of use. unfortunately it is showing its age ( displays problems etc ) so i bought a new head unit. i want to upgrade my speakers and i know that the fronts are 3 1/2's. my question is - what is the maximum depth for the front speakers? i know some brands have clearance issues. and also for those running door speakers, what is the maximum depth, overall dimensions etc. i do not know if my car came with the wiring for the door speakers since i have never had the door panels off.

The best way for you to know your clearances would be to pop off the door panel and measure with the window rolled all the way down.

I am running

Blaupunkt 3 1/2" speakers in the dash
Pioneer 6 1/2" speakers at all four corners

I had no issues with clearance. You might be able to get depth information from www.crutchfield.com

I know i have infinity components in the door and i had a clearance issue with them. Pioneers would fit nicely. The only time you might run into clearance issues is with higher end speakers as they usually come with a larger magnet structure. Just find a decent set of 6.5's and 3.5's and then it should be 5x7's in the back. Just remember that you are looking for good sound quality and not a whole lot of bass, that's what subs are for.

i have infinity kappa 6.5's in the door and they fit fine, you should be able to fit most speakers in there, just use a spacer

wow, thanks for all the information everyone. i used to be big into the whole superpowerful stereo craze, but i quickly grew out of that. now i like clarity in my music. clean highs, good midrange and just enough bass to give the music some depth. now i can go shopping for matching speakers. thanks again.

Crutchfield is definitely the place to go for any information. You can even get live help over the internet (i think). I buy all my equipment from them just b/c of the ease and help. Good stuff!

I'm running infinity kappas also. I believe it's 5.25 in the door. I got them off e-bay for like $50 for the door and dash speakers. They fit fine and have great sound/low distortion.
