My belt popped!

My alternator belt popped on my way home from the store. The breaks went out, the power steering lock up, and my battery light came on and dropped in pressure. I had to drive it about 2 miles after it popped, do you think I damage a ny thing? Oh yeah my car ran hot, (at the edge of normal). I was going to try and put the belt on myself but it's all jammed up inside and I have no mechanic skills. Plus I need to get a full tune up anyhow, my buddy is a mechanic with his own shop about 5 miles away. Would it be dangerous to coast it there?

Is this on a 4.6ltr Mustang GT ?

I think if the belt is popped, the battery has to run everything electrical, as the alternator isnt' working. You risk over heating, as the water pump doesn't run. Not to mention the power steering can't operate as the power steering pump isn't being pumped. My answer is no, I don't recommend driving it, especially 5 miles. If he's your buddy, get him to come over there and have a look at it. While you're at it, have him swing by the auto parts store and pick up a new belt.

alternator belt? you only have 1 serpentine belt. It goes through the alternator, water pump, power steering, A/C, (in my case, supercharger) and of course the crank. You probably didn't hurt anything driving just 2 miles. I wouldn't drive 5 miles without a belt but that's just me. Get a haynes manual and put it on yourself.

Thats what I was thinking. That's why I asked if its on a 4.6ltr Mustang GT or not.

these guys post the same question on every mustang board. funny thing is the same guy will answer the question on every board. I read on every forum but mainly just post here and corral, too much work following replies on 10 different forums.

and to the OP just change your belt yourself, its as basic as it gets. just cut the old one out piece by piece.

Also, you should have been smelling burning rubber and had smoke coming from the hood, unless the belt miraculously didn't wedge itself around the crank pulley. Last time I saw a belt that slipped off got all tangled around the water pump and crank. The reason that belt popped off was the guy's power steering pump had gone bad (the bearings), and the pulley was flopping all around. Take a peek at all of your pulleys, and assure that they are all in line perfect with eachother, and that they spin freely, with no funky noises. I've personally never had a belt jump off for no reason. It's always either been the belt snapping, a pulley stopping or coming loose, or me hitting a massive puddle. Good luck!

Thanks that helped alot. I did smell burning rubber no smoke though, but I I smelled Coolant. It was tangled all aorund the crank so I had to play with it to get ot out. My main drive pulley spins fine and the other pulleys seem line up as well. I'm going to run out to check ther pullies to make sure they spin...BRB....OK just got back from outside, all the pulleys spin fine and are sturdy.

One other concern I had was the collant over flowed. all around the battery is wet! My battery was weak anyway eventhough it started righty up when I just checked it. I going to replace the battery, and get new wires and plugs. It doesn't look like the coils got wet but I'll confirm that with the tune up. My pop is on the way with the belt so I'll post back the results. Thanks again guys.

Once you get that belt on, make sure that tensioner is applying an ample ammount of pressure against the belt. It should move a bit, but it shouldn't flop around. Get it started, and kick the throttle a few times by the TB and watch the belt. See if it jumps or anything. A good suggestion would be to get a Goodyear Gatorback belt, as it adds a nice mild whine. (mini-supercharger)

Can you get that from a local autozone or pepboys?

Oh...jeez the story was similar to another with a broken belt.

The swap is pretty easy. As far as the coolent...just dry it up best you can. It won't really hurt anything but make it look a mess.

It is possible with the pre-mid-2001 crank pulley design for the belt to slip off when splashed with water... There is a TSB for it I believe and the pulley design was updated in mid-2001. That is why when buying underdrive pullies for 2001 you have to be especially careful to get the right ones.

i think the range spreads more then mid 2001... my 2002 used to have the belt pop off all the time when i hit standing water that i couldnt see. though it hasnt done it reciently....

Thanks it went on pretty easy. I cantbelieve it was that easy. I think I'm going to try and do some more stuff like a full tune up!
