When I got in my car this afternoon and turned it on, there's a loud high pitched droning noise that sounds like wind blowing through a pipe. This noise is loud enough that you can hear it a 1/2 block away.
I opened my hood and the noise is coming from the front right passenger side somewhere around the wheel area. The noise is so loud it hurts my ears and is too difficult to pinpoint. The best description is a very loud "high pitched" droning noise like air rushing through a pipe at a high speed. I've had the car two years and never heard anything like this before.

Anyone have any advise on this issue? I found nothing when I did a search.
The car is a 04 gt 5sp with a jlt cai with maf inside fenderwell.

Sounds like an idler pully that is very close to seizing up to me.

I don't think so. The JLT setup has been on since last year. I'll check the idler pully. The car only has 28000 miles on it.

Sorry, my post sounded 'smart-assed' .. what I meant to say was check your filter and maf to make sure that nothing is loose and what not.

Wind going through a pipe sounds like something with your CAI set up. Maybe you poked a whole in your Filter and its kind of sucking air through that hole, like a straw.

That is where I would start.

Maybe someone put a S/C on while you were sleeping?

Does the pitch of the sound increase with rpm's? Does the noise change at all with increased rpm's? I know you said it was loud and hard to pinpoint because it was painful....but suck it up and get it done! J/K!

Remove everything before your MAF and run the engine for a short period of time (short because no air filtration). If the sound continues, then it's not your filter.

Ok has anything happened to the car? Does it do it driving or sitting still? Does it change with roadspeed or rpms?

Few things to check
If you've taken a bottoming out might have knocked you manifolds loose and causing an exhaust leak the metal gaskets make a very strange sound when they first start to go.
Idler pulley like other have said
Major belt slippage
Throwout bearing starting to go
Intake leak somewhere. IE CAI, Plenum, Tb, ETC
Wheel bearing ( of course you'd only hear that going down the road)
Altenator going out ( I've seen some make all kinds of noise when they start to go)
exhaust leak
EGR leak

or maybe the Supercharger Fairies visited you. If so please send them to my place

i have the same noise, and i cant figure it out either... I am going to take a stab at a few occurances that might help decide if we are hunting the same problem or not.

my noise happens when its usually warm out, after the engine has heated up, and only at idle... once i get the RPMs passed 1k it goes away. the sound to me doesnt remind me of air anything, its kinda more along the lines of taking a martini glass, weting your finger with a lime, and running it around the edge of the glass making that reerberation sound.... but its loud.

as far as idler pully, i soaked all my pullies with PB blaster but never went away when the engine is on until i get the RPMs up passed 1k. it drops back down, and the noise comes back. its not an everyday noise, it just comes on, and after that it doesnt go away till it cools down.

just something to think about. mine kinda sounds like its on top of the engine... just cant seem to pinpoint it myself either... been living with it till this weekend when i can spend all day poking at various parts.
